whats up with that, BTW here is a description of a hind leg:

hind legs: a strange shape of legs which is usually common for a cat, dog, rabbit or any other type of ground animal, very useful for gaining speed or jumping great distances.

also, wtf is going on starscream!!!

He doesn't need them for his entry mode.

The legs he has for his earth mode make PERFECT sense.

He's a jet. Were he to transform in mid-flight (since he can't just have and transform and what not..since jets kinda don't hover) and land on the ground with normal legs, the impact would destroy them. With the way his legs are jointed, they can absorb the impact much much better. They are functional, they work, he even shows this in the movie.

Yeah, well he's also got an Intelligence score of 9.0 in his Protoform mode, but an Intelligence of 4.0 in his Earth mode. I'd rather have that figured out.

In the novel, it said that the humans attacked him and fucked up his legs during an attack or something

Damn Hasbro and their drunk employees.

Yeap NGW said it, hind legs make perfect sense. If you're concerned about aesthetics, its not about having hind legs, its just that they're too short.

Wow, that's a new idea to me.

And it makes a lot of sense. Cool.

i heard of that theory about transforming mid flight, they wernt happy with starscreams final design.

but why on earth would they draw a protoform starscream with normal legs, what about the hind legs?!?!?

also hind les > normal legs

Because Protoform Starscream is obviously just a design Hasbro made to suit the purposes of a transforming toy.

For the record, the proper term isn't "hind legs" but "digigrade legs" (I.e. walking-on-toes-legs). Humanoids only have hind/bottom legs ;)

As far as the leg-design goes, IMO it's another example of the movie making almost-convincing-but-not-really-"logical" choices about the robot designs to make them seem more legitimately "alien."

Somehow "F22 changes into trapezoidal chicken and back again" doesn't sound like a great box-blurb to me ;)

That's one neat explanation! I'm thinking they work the same way a cat's hind legs work when they land after jumping or something now, but what do I know.

It's not a plot hole because Protoform SS never appeared in the movie.

It like what FFN said, they were just making him a protoform toy and didn't bother to think that far.

NGW's response pretty much sums up the canon version of it as far as how they work and why he has them.

Plus, like Poho said, they just look cool.

Also, I wish people would stop calling them chicken legs, when they look about as chicken as a dog's legs. Though the toed feet add somewhat to the look. But again, toed feet make sense if they have digits on their hands. (like most creatures) Gives them a sense that during reformatting they chose to keep their bodies looking more alien like how they might have looked on Cybertron.

I was trying to come off as a sarcastic jerk. People are really stretching to find flaws nowadays with the movie.

I don't think the legs are a problem at all. That's least of my concern

However, I think there is a problem with having the TFs blink.
