Sumdac is commonly referred to as "Professor" Sumdac, along with his name and "Doctor." The latter two I totally understand, but Sumdac is obviously an inventor and industrial magnate, and not an academic of any kind. "Professor" as an honorific indicates a position within a faculty, and does not always mean PhD, although that is commonly the case.

Scientists CAN be professors, and vice versa, but we haven't seen any indication that Sumdac is a professor, have we?

As an academic myself, this interchangeability of "Doctor" and "Professor" just kind of bugs me.

He's gotta be pretty old; was inventing stuff when he discovered Megatron's head and then the story skips ahead 50 years to when the Autobots are awoken. He could very well have taught classes on the side during at least part of those 50 years.

I don't remember him ever being called Doctor Sumdac.

I find it quite likely that he actually is a Professor, esspecially since, like Butz said, he had probably tought at some point in his life.

As a world renowned expert on robotics, he probably has a seat at the New Detroit university or something, alongside Prof. Penny Princess PHD.

Sumdac has never been called "doctor" throughout the entire show. He's a reverse-engineering genius and robotics expert. He can build equilibrium-damaging weapons in mere minutes. I think the title "professor" fits him.

All of the responses so far are valid, except I don't understand the rationale behind this one. ^^"Professor" isn't a rank of a person's intellect, it's a job title. I.e., I'm a mere MA, not a genius by any means, and am a professor, whereas Bill Gates is positively brilliant and isn't a professor of any kind.

I doubt Sumdac's that old. Perhaps mid-40s, 50 at most. He has a preteen daughter, for one, and he was just a kid, I believe, when he finds Megs. Not saying that rules anything out.

As for him never being referred to as "Doctor," I stand corrected.

It's most likely he holds a university position that is inactive, as was suggested above. Still, I'd like it to be made explcit at some point. For narrative reasons, they seem to just call him "professor" to denote braininess.

There was a 50 year jump from when he found megatron to when the autobots wake up.

SO I'd guess he'd be anywhere between 60 and 80,
and who knows what condition Medical science is in by the time.
    He could be relatively "young".

Sumdac was a teenager fifty years ago when Megs' head crashed outside his home, dude. He has to be at least in his late sixties. Probably why he had to build a daughter instead of getting one.

Ominous implications, but good points. Any way you slice it, he's very "ahem" active well into his 50s and 60s. Perhaps Viagara has advanced far beyond modern capacity for imagination.

You... didn't watch the first or last episode, did you?

Sari's been confirmed as a robot.

GAH! Why? That's like saying, "I know how to put out a fire, that makes me a firefighter." What you are able to do and what your job title is have NOTHING to do with each other.

You don't just get to be called a professor for being a certain level of "smart." It's a job you get, just like any other.

Dunno if you want spoilers or not, but nobody's out right said it and it explains some of your gripes and Viagra theories-
    Sari isn't a biological daughter, she's a robot.

Okay, but just for the sake of appearances... Sari's "condition" is obviously not public knowledge, so for the sake of appearances she had to have had a "mother" at some point. Unless... didn't they say somewhere that Sari's openly adopted? In that case, the mother's status as well as Isaac's age are pretty much moot.

He knows his shit, that's what I was trying to say. He seems to be a giving fellow, too... he's probably giving back to the community.

However, the title professor is often used in shows to highlight intelligence. I doubt The Professor from the Powerpuff Girls was a teacher, but he certainly was a brilliant scientist.

Or perhaps, in the 22nd century they really do just hand out Professor-ships to anybody who knows their jive.

Make your own personal canon about how the 21st century saw a great virtual war, with Bill Gates wanting to be a professor, without academic tenure, and spammed the bejaysus out of everyone (assisted by Dr Dre, General Levi and Honky Tonk Man's The Colonel) until he was acknowledged as a Professor. After that, anybody with a bit of conviction and ability could be called Professor.

See also Professor Princess. I doubt she has taught anywhere.

Or, or, or... Professor is his given name, before Isaac. It seems professions double quite often as firstnames in 22ndC Detroit. I doubt Porter C Powell is actually a porter.

Professor Princess is an obvious exception: "Professor/Doctor" as part of a superhero/villain name has never meant anything. Except with Marvel, who retconned all their "Doctors" in the 80s to actually be doctors.

And yes, the term "Professor" is used to denot intelligence in television shows. I mentioned that above, and how I thought it was annoying.

The Professor from Powerpuff could have been a research professor (Universities hire all sorts of people to do stuff other than teach). My issue with Sumdac isn't that he's a generic smart person (like Powerpuff's Professor), it's that he's obviously a business magnate and inventor by trade.

I was ready to accept the "has held a university position part-time in the past" for the sake of narrative, but not "He's smart, so he's a professor."
