It's like vampire and the stake. Cutting off the head is the only SURE fire way to kill them. If another limb gets hacked off a mechanical being can easily have it replaced. Attcking a spark is foolish and a wasteful move as heavily protected by armor-platting. Well from what we've seen of the robots' the necks and heads are the least protected part of the body. Hacking a head off even if the bot can repair itself is probably the easiest way to deal with a foe. Processor can't process a body not attach to it.

 

I think when ROTF comes out someone should put all the clips of Prime taking off heads

Along GreenChick's lines, if we're trying to place an explanation on Prime's decapitation tendencies, perhaps taking off the head is often the most efficient way of incapacitating a foe. Other limbs may possess armaments and armour and be thicker to cut through as well as being mobile; the head is usually the smallest, least protected and most targetable part of the body and thus is the most vulnerable to attack, plus it houses the main processor that controls the rest of the body, so removing the head renders the body harmless too. Prime is in fact simply selecting the easiest way to dispose of foes. That, or he's a head-hunter from Borneo.
