According to The Digitial Bits, MS is cutting the price of the add-on from $199 to $129.

This was reported by 1up.com, but I can't get the page to show up at the moment. Maybe you can: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3158163

Sorry, not going to happen. They aren't even releasing a black HD-DVD drive. They wouldn't release a Blu-Ray player unless the HD-DVD market completely implodes upon itself.

Actually Microsoft were quote as saying "If Blu-Ray wins, we'll support it."

Microsoft seem to be on the uber defensive of late.

By the time either format winds the 360 will have the Business Elite Premium Edition out where they piss off the people who bought their Business Elite and Elite Premium models in 2008 and 2009.

My bad. I was rushing and typed in the wrong numbers. It's not a $20 price cut down to $179 - It's a $70 price cut, down to $129.

Wow, shit, that's pretty awesome. I wonder if it's Microsoft clearing otherwise unmoving stock or it's being subsidised, or simply just cheaper to manufacture?

Still not interested. One of the worst implimentations of an add on since the 32X.

d00d, the 32x was badass!1!!1!one. I loved that star wars game. well, not really. Actually, I think the 32x was a little better of an idea then this external drive. Something of a "life extension" device. May not have worked that well but it was a good idea :p

If you believe the PR, BluRay discs have been outselling HD about 2-1 since Christmas. Since I don't think its economic desparity between the bases, it's likely that BR is benefiting from the huge boost of adding 1,000,000+ consumers with the launch of the PS3.

HD is claiming that many of the BR sales are the result of coupons or freebies packaged with the players, but I don't know what the evidence for that is. Even if that were the case, though, studios and consumers looking at those numbers have to see a strong trend in BRs favor. I think MS realizes the only way they can counter that is by getting HD players in the hands of more people, and if they can get just 10% of the 360 base to get an HD drive, that would translate to another million or so HD consumers. At $129, I can easily see that 10% taking the plunge.

It also looks like some companies are lowering the prices of their low-end HD players to $300-400. So this could be one of two things:

    1) An agressive move to maintain parity with Blu-Ray.
    2) The beginning of a clearance sale.

We won't know which it is for at least a few more months.

Does Microsoft have any investment in HD-DVD other than making a player for the XBox?
