Behold, the fourth installment of Peter Bagge's Apocalypse Nerd!

Our "heroes" have stumbled across a self-sustaining community of seemingly well-organized scientists and engineers. What luck! The encampment also has food and computers, and the only news that the pair have heard since Seattle went up in a cloud of nuclear smoke. But just when our neurotic, geeky protagonist Perry starts to feel he's sittin' pretty, all hell breaks loose! This could be a permanent rift between him and his best friend, Gordo . . . what's happened now?!

Also, in "Founding Fathers Funnies," those wacky Bean Towners John Hancock, Paul Revere, and Sam and John Adams raise a little terrorist-style hell of their own.

GHOST IN THE SHELL 1.5: HUMAN-ERROR PROCESSOR #1 (of 8)

    Publisher:
    Dark Horse Comics
    Writers: Shirow Masamune
    Pencils: Shirow Masamune
    Covers: Shirow Masamune

    Part 1 of 8
Deep into the twenty-first century, the line between man and machine has been inexorably blurred as humans rely on the enhancement of mechanical implants and robots are upgraded with human tissue. In this rapidly converging technoscape, the covert-ops agents of Section 9 are charged to track and crack the most dangerous terrorists, cybercriminals, and ghost hackers. And speaking of ghosts, when supposedly dead people start turning up walking and talking, Section 9 begins to look into the possibility that corpses are being "puppeted" from a remote location, and some serious powerbrokers may be pulling the strings.

Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human-Error Processor presents for the first time in America the "lost" Ghost in the Shell stories, created by Shirow Masamune after completing work on the original Ghost in the Shell manga and prior to his tour-de-force, Ghost in the Shell 2: Man-Machine Interface, but never collected until now. Focusing on Section 9 agents in their daily battle against technocrime, Human-Error Processor has all the mind-twisting cybermadness you've come to expect from Ghost in the Shell but set in a more police-procedural context with action and suspense galore.

This first issue features part one of "Fat Cat," the first of four Ghost in the Shell tales.

Two feature-length stories in one volume! Video games can get too realistic, as the flying teenager, GoGirl! discovers in "Prisoners of the Machine," when she and her friends find themselves trapped inside a computer, menaced by giant anime-robots! And in "Double Trouble," GoGirl!'s archenemies create a robot that looks just like her, except that it has the mind of a master criminal! How can our heroine convince the cops that she didn't rob that bank, when everyone saw her do it? Plus, GoGirl!'s sidekick, Haseena, tired of always being rescued by the flying teen, takes up sleuthing herself in "Haseena Ross, Girl Detective."

THE LITTLE BOOK OF HINDU DEITIES

    Publisher:
    Plume
    By: Sanjay Patel

Don't mess with Kali, cautions Patel on the opening page of this arresting, innovative, entertaining book. Who knew the Hindu pantheon could be so much fun? Patel, an animator at Pixar studios, breathes new life into old mythology, telling the exploits of various deities while drawing us in—literally—with his joyous and unexpected full-color illustrations. In the introduction, he notes that he has always been influenced by Japanese animation, and his renderings bear the mark of the wide-eyed, large-headed, simple style that he so admires. The book is awash in color, with vivid saffrons, purples, fuchsias and oranges adding a lushness to the tales he recounts. Although some of the design work is too trendy to last—to wit, the oversized green and yellow polka dots that decorate some interstitial pages—it is precisely that faddish nod to the au courant that will make the book popular with teens and 20-somethings, who are the core audience ("Next time you're angry with your parents, don't turn into a monster," Patel jokes after introducing us to Bhairava, a vengeful incarnation of Shiva). Both funny and informative, this is a fresh and breezy introduction to the Hindu gods.
