    Prepping for Protector (complete)

My Protector and Sidearm should be showing up sometime next week, hopefully. So I've been getting ready for it. I replaced my Classics Rodimus with Henkie Hot Rod a while back, but held on to my Classics Rodimus so I could have Henkei as my Hot Rod, and use the Classics version for my Rodimus Prime. I'm a Henkei collector, so I wanted to give my "Rodimus Prime" a more "Henkei" appearance. I'll be using the chromed wing extensions that come with the Sidearm set, but I always hated the Classics flames and the blue headlights.

So first thing I did was remove the flames with rubbing alcohol.

Then I added some "chrome" to the headlights using Bare Metal foil. Bare Metal foil comes in different finishes and can be found in most hobby shops. I used "ultra bright chrome" finish. Cut some stips larger than the area you want to cover, and gently rub it on with a q-tip or something non abrasive.

Then carefully trim around the area with a sharp x-acto blade and pull off the excess.

Then I painted over top with some Tamiya clear orange paint. There will be a couple more coats before I'm done.

    Still to come....

    - more coats of clear orange on the headlights
-application of Reprolabels Hot Rod hood/chest sticker
-application of Reprolabels Autobot badges to the Protector Armor once it arrives

Word of warning the Protector armor can scratch the chrome autobot emblem on the chest stick of the Hot Rod reprolable set. :(

I tried something similar to this once with my classics Rodimus using foil tape, but ultimately the stuff came off and I found myself questioning exactly why I did it in the first place... now you reminded me and I'm going to have to start over again!

    Thanks guys!!

It would be pretty tricky to use this stuff on the wheels. It's pretty thin and can tear easily. Bare Metal foil is usually used for Automotive scale models, for the chrome trim that's molded on the cars. Usually you'd put a clear coat over top of it to seal it on. I'm hoping that the clear orange I'm painting on will also act like a clear coat and seal the foil on.

    that is so cool!

I totally forgot about the BMF, I used to use it all the time on the models I made growing up, glad you reminded me!!!
Nice job BTW, do you plan on foiling the spoilers then too when the time comes?

    Thanks for the compliments guys!

I think that even if you paint a clear color on top of the foil on the spoiler, the wing extensions from the Protector armor will scrape the paint and probably peel and/or rip the foil. Considering the wing extensions are made to fit on the stock Hot Rod wing, once you start to add foil and paint you'll be making the stock wing thicker and it'll scrape a lot more. Besides, in alt. mode with the trailer attached you barely see Hot Rods wing, and in bot mode the chromed wing extensions will be more visible.

My Protector did arrive this past week. I also finished up the little mods. The "chromed" headlights don't look quite as good as the actual Henkei ones, but I still think they look MUCH better than the metalic blue painted headlights that were on there before. Personally I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

That looks really good, you have to look really close to tell the difference between the two headlights, that's how good your technique works for the headlights.

    Great job on this man.

Thanks!! The difference is probably a little more noticeable in person. But it does actually look pretty decent, so I'm happy with it.

And that's all that matters, if you're happy with it, then that's all that matters.

    Again, looks really great.
