I still remember the HUGE promotional push Fox gave MMPR back in the day. To this day, I can't recall a series getting THAT much of a push from a Network. I watched it until Zeo, then other interests came in. I'm still waiting for the special reissue of the original Megazord and Dragonzord from Bandai But Operation Overdrive zords look good, Invincible Robot Laboratory had some images, might be the first time since I was a kids that I buy the series Megazord
You know, speaking of Power Rangers, didn't there used to be some sort of crossover with them and the Big Bad Beetleborgs (THAT brought back SO many memories)? I could've sworn there was a crossover like that.
I started to get a little annoyed when Saban flooded the market with regioned Sentai imports, like Beetleborgs, VR Troopers and that other one, I think it was called "Superhuman Samurai Squad" or something. I'm amazed the overabundance of Senta shows didn't kill Power Rangers' popularity.
What if you've felt repulsion and disgust since the beginning? But I was ~16 and a junior in high school and only marginally aware of MMPR's existence. When I would occasionally come across the show, I thought it was the most god-awful thing I'd ever seen...Voltron/TF ripoff, bad kid actors even for a kid's show, stupid foam badguys, at the mix of American/Japanese footage. Ugh. I was just a liiittle too old for TMNT too, but I could at least get that. MMPR was my first,"Damn, they just don't make 'em like they used to." moment. I'm honestly surprised, even with the complete revamp every year after '96, that the damn things are still around.
I was one of the few people in my group of friends to like MMPR, and it was mainly because the Zords reminded me of TFs....I still have the toys, all of the original series, most of Zeo, a couple from....I can't remember which Space themes series had the Mega-Winger and Astro Megazord...and the Wild Force Megazord. Fun times, They have quite a legacy.
Yesterday I was channel surfing and happened to come upon Power Rangers Mystic force. I started watching a battle bewteen a Train Megazord and Some monster looking guy. For some reason I found it strangely compelling...
Sentai predates GoLion in Japan. So technically, Voltron ripped off Power Rangers Actually, DiC brought over Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad in the wake of PR's popularity. I don't recall crossovers with VR Troopers or Beetleborgs, but I know Saban kicked off Masked Rider with a 3 part Power Rangers crossover.
Uh, no. Sentai is no rippoff. You need to check out the Super Sentai Wiki. The first sentai to use a robot was Battle Fever J in 79. The first sentai to use a transforming robot was Denjiman in 80. Go Lion wasn't made untill 81. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Sentai
I used to collect Power Rangers when Transformers was in it's dark ages. G2's wild colors and the first of the Beast Wars didn't interest me at all. Once I start seeing the show I got interested, picked up a transmetal or two... Power Rangers fell to the wayside quickly. I've still got every Megazord up until Lost Galaxy stored away. We might see a decline soon... possibly anyway. ABC Family doesn't air it before school anymore and it gets flak on Toon Disney for not being a cartoon. That and 30 million fewer homes get Toon Disney. I know, I know, still airs saturday mornings at noon... A TF fan can hope, can't he? They originally brought VR Troopers over to star Jason David Frank (Tommy) as his own sentai-esque show, but since he was too popular to take off the franchise they nixed the idea.
i detailed cars in beverly hills with the sixth ranger (wolf/silver, or something like that) from mystic force.
So very true! Sentai and all that follows its model owes a lot to what Spiderman introduced. Though the idea of a hero leaping into a mecha goes all the way back to Tetsujin and Mazinger, it's Spiderman that first brought it into live action, and then Battle Fever that transferred it into Super Sentai. To my knowledge their aren't any anime that follow the "sentai formula" before this.
I used to love Power Rangers in its MM days, lost interest around zeo and turbo and only caught bits and pieces. I have pretty much every MMPR toy released over here i believe...
I never got into it. I always preferred spending my money on transforming robots that weren't piloted by irritating adolescents.
I was so into Power Rangers that it's nausiating nowadays. And I still think Kimberly should have hooked up with Jason instead of that Green Ranger with a Mech-Godzilla ripoff.
I simplu LOVE Rangers, not so much as Tfs' but I reallu like those series. I am also well informed about Super Sentai originals series. In most of the cases PR was a better product thgan its Japanese counterpart. Here in Peru, the series that was very popular first was Japanese LIVEMAN, but MMPR brought the popularity of this series to fantastic levels. I think PR is great and and a all-time-enjoyable show. The only series I HATEd was Turbo.
The Dragonzord was pretty cool. I liked how it combined with the Megazord. I used to keep my Dragonzord in the bathroom, explaining that it's because he rises from the depths of the ocean.
