Picked this up at Wal-Mart in San Diego. He's a very decent figure. However, the shoulders being entirely clear plastic worry me. I wouldn't necessarily recommend him on his own, but if you're trying to complete your own set of Generations Dinobots, then you probably already made up your mind on him.

The Dinobots look pretty great together, I must say.

But personally, I really just wanted to complete Volcanicus. It's nice seeing another combiner with a cohesive color scheme.

Does he have Hasbro stamps on the outside of his spines?

So far Snarl is my third favorite of the power of the primes dinobots behind Swoop and Sludge specifically.

I gotta ask this: the gold plastic on Snarl (specifically, his dorsal spine), is it sturdy? Or will it go the way like so many other Transformers toys that have gold plastic and suffer from Gold Plastic Syndrome?

You shouldn't have any problems with the gold plastic. It actually flexes pretty far without stressing.

These really do look great together. I’ve no interest in the combined mode, but they make very faithful G1 updates.

It's an oversided KO of Warbotron's Grimlock kit figure (which was originally a companion piece to their Computron).

What mx-01 archon said haha. I think overall this grimlock looks better than the PotP one with proportions and what not, and over on aliexpress hes about the same price as Grimmy at retail. All i had to do out of the box was paint his faceplate black, it was silver before, and add an autobot logo.

Not a big fan of oversized KOs, but I would buy the hell out of these if they get upsized.

I love the look of this figure, but... there's so much clear plastic. We all are fully aware of the tolerances of clear plastic, it's basically the worst choice right after the gold-flaked plastic that disintegrated so badly after a few years. I worry that individually aside, Volcanicus might end up breaking himself just because of how many parts are clear plastic (Grimlock's torso/chest area in particular worries me a bit)

So, can someone explain why exactly clear plastic is worse? And what exactly causes it?

It's typically viewed as more brittle and in some cases are prone to breakage. I really haven't had this problem with clear plastic on larger areas. Small joints might be a little issue though.

Especially around joints and balljoints, balljoints being worse tan other joints. Case in point, take a look at the PotP Jazz thread, who the majority of his car mode is actually painted clear plastic. Granted, it's nice paint. Definitely a step up from what they were trying before when it came to white-painted 'formers. But the plastic is -very- flimsy feeling, it tends to bend when you're just moving Jazz's arms (his arms being attached to the clear portion via a pin), and at least two users have reported breakage and almost-broken cracks.

I haven't heard anything about the dinobots and their many clear parts, but I fear it is mostly a matter of time. :(

Translucent plastic is hard. There's very little give in it compared to opaque ABS of otherwise similar build. Transformers joints are subject to all sorts of different stresses. On regular opaque ABS, the engineers will rely on the natural flex and give of the plastic to absorb those stresses. Friction-based attachment joints like balljoints and mushroom pegs rely on that natural flexibility to function properly. Translucent plastic, being much less flexible, will simply crack under circumstances where other plastics will hold up just fine. Extreme stress wear, like popping balljoints off and on, will suffer most noticeably (a good case example of this is Car Robots Mach Alert/RiD Prowl. His scissor doors/hip skirts are translucent plastic and have the ball cups to attach them to his waist. Due to the toy's design, it's not too hard to accidentally lever the doors off the ball pegs. If this happens too often though, the ball sockets inevitably shatter).

If the parts seem prone to popping off, then worry. The most extreme stresses are going to come from snapping parts on and off their balljoints or clips.

If things seem relatively solid in that regard, then it's probably going to be fine.

Back in the day, fans liked to give Hasbro guff over using "cheap" rubbery translucent plastic on toys like Cybertron Starscream, Vector Prime, and Mudflap, over the hard plastic used on their Japanese counterparts. However, as time went on, plenty of reports began to crop up over snapped Galaxy Force Vector Prime wings and swords, shattered Starscream swords, or broken Mudflap hooks. Meanwhile, their Cybertron counterparts have generally held up to this day, if a bit warped.
