Always fun when people write about Transformers as if they've been totally absent from the world since 1987 or so.

Indeed. If enough people believe it, it becomes truth, then history. Anyway, if they haven't seen Transformers since '87 it's just thir loss. I laughed at the phrase " Transformers have been given yet another shot at a career." When did the first one end? :lol

Nope! Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, Zone, etc. up to the Return of Star Convoy & friends, then Euro Transformers, G2, BW, MW, BM, RID, Armada, Energon, Cybetron. Comics are still going too. There hasn't been a real break since 1984! Sure it wasn't always on US/UK shelves but there were always Transformers to be had from somewhere!

That'll be a major plus-point regarding the movie: It will re-invigourate the brand for those people who honestly (and inexplicably) think TRANSFORMERS haven't been around for 20 years.
We're going to see the name everywhere and people who see the brand as nothing more than a childish pursuit may finally see it in a new light.

Yep. The only year with no Transformer releases in the US was 1991, although the Marvel comic was running its final issues (#74-80).

Even so, there were European releases of the Actionmasters (including the exclusive ones), the yellow Constructicons, and the Motorvators (Road Caesar guys). In Japan, the Battlestars line was running, with Star Convoy, Grandus, Sky Garry, and all the MM combiners.

If you had to pick a year where TFs came closest to dying out entirely, that was it - and truthfully there was still quite a bit going on!

It does surprise me that these people that think Transformers haven't been around since 1987 didn't really notice Beast Wars or Beast Machines, or don't associate those with Transformers. I mean, I remember at the time at least seeing some episodes, despite having no interest in them at the time.

Transformers died after Season 3 to a majority of people. A lot of people watched the cartoon, and when it went off the air, people assumed the line died.

And in a lot of ways, it did. Plus, no one in America who was 9 years old had any idea (a majority, I know some of you were uber cool in Cali and had Asian import toys) that Transformers still existed in Japan.

So let's not harp on people who are finally realizing Transformers are still here. Then we really have become the Star Wars/Star Trek nerds.

See, thats the way it was for me (well, after Rebirth anyways). I didn't realize Transformers still existed until Beast Wars. Then I looked back at what all I had missed.

yeah, i remember seeing action masters in stores and being very WTF??? about it, then BARELY noticing G2 and BW. so there were not really transformers to me from micromasters - Car Robots (and i've heard that a lot on here :p ) fortunately, i've seent the light and gone back and filled quite a few G2 and BW sized holes :D  (Actiopn Masters still make me say WTF? though:p )

Can I harp on the writer for comparing Transformers to Howie Mandel?
