Uhh, I wouldn't consider Mass Effect a retro action rpg, but its an action rpg nonetheless.

Seiken Densetsu III, without a doubt. Shame an official North American version was never released.

I really don't consider Zelda to be an RPG, except for II, which draws at least some elements.

My mind still won't wrap around the concept of calling a PS1 era game "retro", but indeed, that was a stellar game.

If we're going that route, I'm throwing Square's other under-appreciated ARPG of the era out there as well, Threads of Fate. Can't say I've ever seen a game the exudes as much charm as that one. Cute, and absolutely hilarious. "World Domination!"

I guess I'll go with Tales of Phantasia and The Legend of Zelda: Link To The Past.

And a pity that one's never gotten a good localization, officially.

The Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 2 it may lack the variety of character choices that its sequel has but its an awesome game in its own right.

    NES Legend of Zelda
    Crystalis
    Faxanadu
    Illusion of Gaia
Ys III - Wanderers from Ys
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Diablo (it came out in '96, does it count?)

Also once a year I take a day or two to play through the original Legend of Zelda in some shape or form.

Outside of the Zelda series, I'd say Willow.

People can't grasp "retro" or "RPG." Thread is ruined.

Whether PS1 games are retro is subjective, but weren't people listing current generation games here?

Meanwhile, the NA GBA adaptation gave us the wonderful "Kangaroo War", and a hilarious (in the wrong way) dub.

    1) Yes
    2) There are still TONs of games being listed that aren't RPGs at all.
    3) It was not a serious post

    Pick the answer you like.
