    ???

I don't see any black boxes around the 3 pics?

Anyways, if this is real, why does it say 6 pieces on the box, but you're only getting 4? Hmmmmm!!!

I just had a beer, so this may not be super coherent, but the bottom line is that we don't know what's up with these weird Optimuses. My best guess is that they were somehow acquired directly from a subcontractor named PEL (whatever that stands for) that Hasbro and Takara hired to make Transformers. But it's just a guess.

Obviously the "PEL" boxes aren't normal--normal US Transformers came in Hasbro-marked cases, just like they do today. And the black boxes around the toy photos are indicative of a later release, since the only two releases that had the black boxes (as far as I know) were the Mexican and Chinese releases, which both came out around 1989. However, I think these had to be made before 1988, since they're made in Japan. By 1988, pretty much everything was made in Macau, Korea, Taiwan, or Hong Kong, I believe. So 1986 or 1987 is probably when these were produced.

In addition to the weird Copyright-blacking-out on the Optimus, he also was selling an Astrotrain that had all of the Copyright/manufacturing string removed. In a weird twist, the Astrotain he's selling now has the Copyright/manufacturing string in tact. So weird.

He's sold at least one of them individually before, so I guess he did the same with the other one.

Compare it to a normal Optimus box and it will be pretty obvious.

He already sold the first 2 on Ebay.

Well, not only that, but it doesn't look like 2 more could fit in that box.

I had a vague memory of the PEL logo being mentioned when I saw it on the case for the auction this thread is about.

I store too much TF info in my brain!

I've actually got a pretty shocking memory for most things, TF's seem to be one of a few exceptions

Depends on what your stance is on vintage G1s, these were for the asian markets & are considered legit vintages.

Can you shed any light on PEL?

(I haven't forgotten the KO sites for you, my Favourites are such a mess, I keep putting off sorting them out, sorry man)

You're confusing these with the Chinese versions. These are not the same thing as those.

Could be just a package variant, you can't really use 1 sample from 1 country to dictate another made & distributed for a different country/region.

I m not saying these are the Chinese versions, but tfs manufacturing in 90s were switched about in Asia due to the industrial growth then. Takara didn't choose to switch about manufacturing plants for the heck of it, it was cheaper then.
