How come there was concept art for ROTF Optimus? There was no change to Optimus from the first movie to the second. For example, there was no concept art for Starscream from ROTF to DOTM, because he didn't change at all. Optimus has concept art for DOTM because he has those nice, big, wide, thick abs
There is also concept art for Ironhide, Ratchet and some others, but why??
None of these characters changed from the first movie to the second, so why did the artists have to do concept for him?

Because they enjoy their profession and want to make more art of their characters?

First of all Starscream did had artwork in ROTF.

and also its mostly for test out new weapons, vehicles, robot designs if they are needed. like in ROTF they tested out the Optimus Prime combining with Trailer (but ended up scrapped but made it to DOTM). in DOTM they tested our how Ironhide New weapons would look like on him.

if you have a first film, but are already planning sequels its always fun and needed to test new weapons, Alt modes and designs if the changes are needed

What we see on the DVD special features and artist web pages isn't ALL the concept art which was executed, but rather simply the stuff the filmmakers and artists felt like sharing. There is undoubtedly TONS more which is less refined, or doesn't represent enough variety to be included, or might reveal ideas intended for use later, or is simply fairly boring set design & wardrobe work, and stuff which hasn't been shared for any number of other reasons.

And there WAS concept art for the different levels of battle damage Optimus received in TF:RotF, as well as the the trailer concepts and new weaponry. Plus, even if the characters don't change much that's still no reason not to explore possibilities at the early stages just to spitball ideas while they have the time before focusing on other ideas.

Hazekiah an eagc7 nailed it. How dare they make concept art of expensive CGI models. Truly a travesty.

You gotta throw stuff at a wall before you can know for sure what's going to stick. For a visual spectacle like a TF film, the concept art is extremely useful, because none of the extraterrestrial cgi stuff exists on earth, so there's nothing for the directors to really go from EXCEPT concept art and its resulting forms. And since you don't know how that art is going to turn out, it's better to hedge your bets and make too much as opposed to not enough. It's money well spent.

Also it's really fun to pore over later for the fans, or collect in special features and coffee table books and such.

If quoting every single response on this thread (barring the OP's silly post :p  ) and writing "THIS" after every single one didn't take up so much time, I'd totally do it. Because everyone who's posted is right in some form or another.

Plus, I'm sure it wasn't a waste of money for the conceptual illustrators who got paid to make those pieces of art that you so erroneously call a "waste of time and money". They're probably quite happy about it.
