so, new mexico's legislative session just ended, and they decided that pluto is still a planet when its visible from new mexico....so, i guess we are gonna teach our kids that there are still 9 planets and everyone else in the world will say there are 8....

I guess that sorta means this lil formers is no longer true...sorta...

Colorado's legislature just ruled that because we cannot see New Mexico, it is no longer a state.

these guys realy need to stop flip flopping on this stuff. i dont want to go into an intelligent conversation and accidently commiting the faux pas of calling pluto a planet or whatever it is the scientific debate of the week then.

Eh, this isn't really anything official. It seems right up there with state governments passing silly resolutions like "today is Mickey Mouse day" or something.

C'mon - "It's a planet when you can see it!" You have fun down there, New Mexico.

(I still want to get this shirt though.)

Never mind that finding the damn thing in the sky is pretty difficult.

I'm pretty sure you can't see Pluto with your naked eye, it's apparent magnitude is around 13, and the limit of the human eye (even with very dark skies) is about 6.

So, does the New-Mexico law say anything about telescopes?

It’s like how Arizona and Hawaii don’t do daylight savings time. There will be 8 planets except in New Mexico where they will have 9.

My own personal legislative session just ended, and we ruled that New Mexico's legislature does not have any scientific authority over such matters.

This is like the junk legislation from the 1800's (if memory serves) that sets pi at 3 in Indiana.

Well that's time well spent. And by that I mean, this might be one of the more ridiculous things that I've heard today.

Truthiness at its best. "There are nine planets because we say that there are nine planets!" And in other news, two plus two is five and there are five lights.

A name is a name. Personally, I don't care what a group of people who stare into a vacuum all day want to call it. I myself will call it a planet. What others want to do about it is up to them. Making legislation about it, however, only goes to prove that polititians need to find some better priorities on what they spend their time with (not being political, just making a statement concerning the profession).

Actually, that reminded me of the same thing. At least not adhering to DST has a basis in reality... but if you want to be consistent about it you probably shouldn't have a uniform time zone across your state or province, either.

thats pretty funny, even if its only slightly true....and yeah, our tax dollars at work...on the plus side, they passed a ban on smoking just about anywhere inside a building thats not your own...which means i can breathe again when i go to a show, or just downtown to have a beer....and hopefully it'll be easier on my fiance to quit, shes been trying but going downtown just kills it cuz everyone is smoking non stop....

and no, i dont believe it says anything about telescopes....
