I want to get to the bottom of this. Since Animated wasn't "G1" to most of you, and neither are the films, then what exactly would be? Do they have to look exactly like the originals? Do they have to have the exact same origins? Give me details.

I'm guessing the plots have to be generaly cheesy ala G1, and the second season's last episode must be the worst thing to ever come out of the cartoon as a whole (animation errors, plot errors, the sky's the limit)!

Same canon that writes over itself numerous times, shoddy and erroneous animation, terrible plots...

Let G1 stay where it is. In my opinion, it's classic, but cheesy and terrible. Animated was better by far.

Simply put, not only do you need the same general plotline, but you also need the same robot character roster and the same personalities displayed either in the original series or on the backs of the toy packaging. Another big factor is the same cast of human supporting characters: Spike, Sparkplug, Chip, Carly, etc.

Nothing can be G1, no matter how hard they try and incorporate things into new versions and reboots.
G1 just had a spark that grabbed me, and millions of others, right away. That spark is absent from any other TF show.
I put it down to G1 being the first TF show I ever saw. That spark may have happened for many when they saw Beast Wars or Energon as their first TF experience. :2c:

I never understood why there wasn't just one continuity kept, instead of reboot after reboot after reinvention of the series.
Sure, any series has contradictions and retcons, one of my other faves Doctor Who is notorious for it, but G1 is the one I measure all things TF on.
The origins, the introductions, the alt modes, the history, etc.

So, in short, their look would always have to be different in live action, but yes, I expected the Bots to be very similar, if not exact, to their characterisations in G1 and yes, I did expect the story to be more faithful to G1. :(
As for 'Animated', its not fundamentally a bad show, but its the animations style that I don't like. Its funky, nikelodeon (?) style with wierd proportions and less than attractive character designs are what put me off.
At least in G1 they tried to keep the designs 'realistic' (common you know what I mean) looking. :)

Plus, as a side note, for a long time the TF toyline lost its way. G1, up until the Movie, was about robots in disguise, DISGUISE. Real world trucks, cars and so forth.
All the toys we saw for a long time after G1 would stick out on a highway like an aircraft carrier full of pink elephants. But thats just personal taste. :D

I think it all comes down to animation. The 80's cartoons such as Transformers and G.I. Joe used a sort of anime/sort of realistic style. Backgrounds looked realistic, people looked realistic. It's basically all about look and tone, and I don't think we'll ever see it again.

However, I'm not a purist, because I also love Beast Wars, Animated and RiD, a ton. Animated may look nothing like G1, but that was a beautifully made show, by fans, for fans. And I loved every second of it.

    What I want?
I want the heads to look G1. I would love if it fit into the G1 universe (which I know is vague but BW was able to do it)
If its a reboot thats cool but pls use the original tech specs as your source material. THAT is G1. Everything else is someones idea based of that.

I may be opening a can of worms here but what is needed for a new g1 cartoon is already there with the new movies (forgive me if ROTF strays from this as I have yet to see it). You have all the classic characters, and I would change their looks a little to resemble the g1 style with regards to the fact that the majority of the tfs look like a bunch of sharp peices of metal glued together and their alt modes need to resemble their original counterpart's a little more, including mass shifting, every one accepted the fact that Rick Moranis could shrink his kids in Honey I Shrunk The Kids. Why couldn't ultra powerful super high tech robots do the same?. Even Sam's last name is the same as Spike and Sparkplug's.
Other things I would change is the fact that cybertron is destroyed, it always played an intergral role in the g1 series, providing a great source of plotlines. Also I would do away with this allspark nonsense and bring back the matrix of leadership. They never needed a holy grail like the allspark to fight over. They fought because the decepticons were bent on controlling everything and the autobots were sworn to stop them. That is all they needed to destroy eachother.

Well, for a "pure" G1 style characters and personalities need to be the same and they need to look the same as much as possible (think Classics) with a less anime animation style. Comics seem to have no problem getting a G1 reboot right in terms of the needed elements, should be easy to do it for a future cartoon too if Hasbro ever wanted to.

Loved TFA btw and wanted it to keep going.

i think if they blended g1's characters and storylines with the animation of animated, it would be great.

I agree with you on all fronts. It doesn't seem that hard to me for them to make it more faithful, in live action especially.
I have the same feelings about 'War Of The Worlds' - as yet, no faithful adaptation exists - other than Pendragon's well intended but abysmally realised film.
