Technology patent lawsuits are so flawed and frivolous it's not even funny. And how come IBM is not named in the suit? I mean they're the ones making the cell chips, not Sony. There's no chance that the PS3 will be impounded and destroyed.

I find it hard to believe that chip technology invented in 1991 hasn't been used by anyone until now. Isn't what they are describing what all multiple core processors do?

You have a valid point, I think they are addressing the way the Cell processor allocates the memory resources. But I don't know enough about it to speak any further on the subject.

Seems like another headline grabbing "news" article. Wake me up when one of them actually wins. ;)

I hope Sony crushes them in court. I'm really getting sick of every knuckle dragging asshat trying to squeeze a dime out of somebody elses work.

Yeah, honestly, I never fully understood the whole "rumble" feature deal. Had nintedo paid for the right for the rumblepack on the N64. It never truly appeared to me like this was any kind of invention, rather just a use of technology that people have had in PC controller and rumbling toys for years and years. I mean you can see the revolving magnets on the transparant controllers, something that I have seen used in electrical devices since before Sony even produced the PS1. Then this company comes in and cries bloody murder because their not-so-inovative idea was stolen without their permission.

Obviously I don't know the details, but it seemed like quite a reach to claim that something like a rumbling gadget could be attributed to one sole company.

Knowing Sony's legal team, I'm sure it will not even make it that far.

Saw this on slashdot. The suit doesn't hold water.

They should be suing IBM not Sony since Sony only buys the Cell processor from IBM who actually manufactures it. IBM does have a patent on the tech in the cell processor and the wording of its patent actually cites the 1991 patent that is in the current suit as being different enough to pose no threat. The US patent office awarded the patent to IBM thus already ruling Paralell's patent being different enough from the cell processor to be non infringing.

Also this patent expires in 2008. This is just a company chasing a settlement.

Dual shock was a genuine infringement. Microsoft dealt with it by licensing the tech and paying appropriate royalties, Nintendo used a different technology entirely, and Sony went to court and lost over it.

This patent however is not the same case.
