Anyone here ever have or ever saw that Black Playstation that came out that allowed you to make your own games?
was it a good idea and would that idea work for this or the next gen console? Thoughts and opinions, please.

    Net Yaroze.

Microsoft already has a program called XNA which allows you to create and publish games for like $200 a year or something like that.

PlayStation 3 has a linux install, you could concievable make your own games using that but they lock out a lot of the processors in the process, so it's not really worth it.

it would be nice to see some new and fresh shizzle. isn't this pretty much how behemoth started? with Alien Hominid as a flash game or something? i'm mos tlikely completely incorrect yo.

Behemoth was already running Newgrounds and making shit in flash. Xbox's PC based architecture made it a breeze to expand and port the game over, most likely. If you're looking at Indie's making their way over to the big time there are dozens of guys out there. However, their success comercially has been very slight, with only Splash Damage delivering high quality stuff, however that doesn't always equate to sales as Quake Wars shows. Their next project, Brink, looks like the awesome, though.

People bag jobs out of this kind of thing fairly often, but it's still relatively rare for any team to make the bigtime fully intact.

i still have my OPS mag demo discs that have loads of games made on the Net Yaroze, i should dig that out, i remember at least 2 or 3 games that were quite good.

anyways, i'd be nice to see some fresh ideas coming out, too many sequels and remakes these days ;)

Net Yaroze would be a cool collectors piece to have, but there are much better ways to make your own games now.

I saw Net Yaroze on a Playstation Underground disc, and IIRC, they said it would cost you only about $700-$750.
i liked the idea, but not paying that much to make NES/Flash level games.
funny thing, i saw something called RPG Maker for the PS2, which made me think of the NY and this thread.

I never expected a machine that cranked out God of War III, but something cooler than a flashy version of Asteroids or Puzzle Fighter, lol.

eh, if you wanted to make a decent game on the playstation, it was easy and cheap to do so. just grab a copy of RPG Maker. people made all sorts of non-RPGs with it. platformers, puzzle games, board games, the works.

Yeah but there are cheaper ways to do that. I used to do it for people. I think I still have my "Region Free" PS1 laying around somewhere.
