I went to about 10 places this weekend looking to buy one of those new-fangled Playstation 3 thingamadoozits and no one had any in stock.
It looks like I could order one from Amazon, but I’m not sure that they’re shipping immediately either.

    Does anyone know what gives?

It's actually pretty much the same here. PS3's have been in short supply and they go out pretty much as they come in. Haven't see one available at Target or Best Buy in a few weeks.

If I see one here in Austin Smash, I'll let you know. But I've noticed the same situation here.

Mostly I want to get it so I can hook my current blu-ray player up to my TV so the wife and I can watch Netflix on that set without my always having to hook up the laptop.

I think I’ll just order through Amazon and get it delivered to my job.
I can’t stand the way UPS just drops stuff off on your front door.

I've noticed there aren't any at the stores here either. I saw a new slim the other day and it's really a lot smaller. If only it were BC I would replace my Fatty 60gb PS3.

Sony announced there would be a shortage. I see few here in the middle west from time to time but they are fairly rare.

Why not just get another BR player? Most of them support Netflix now anyway? Or is this the "excuse" heheh

edit: Then again, from what I've noticed, my PS3 and 360 run Netflix way better than my Samsung BR player, and the PS3 is running it wireless.

Do you really have to ask why:p ? Maybe 4 years back it would have been believable but now...

This, and the tax return and future 3D support are the excuses. :thumb
And yeah, I have a Samsung BD player and while the Netflix console on that is nice, it’s also comparatively clunky.
So, the Samsung goes in the bedroom and the PS3 goes in the family room –eventually anyway.

I also noticed that Sony seems to have taken the Microsoft dickish route in licensing their wireless tech.
I saw a couple of nice third party controllers –all wired.
There was one Mad Catz pad that was wireless, but it required its own USB dongle. :(

Hey, you have a Samsung BR player? Why the hell is the audio so low on that thing. I tried to mess with every setting, and I have to take my TV to 100 to hear anything.

    I have a Samsung BDP-1590.
It's hooked up to the TV with RCA and the Sherwood via optical.
I have no problem with the audio at all.

How is yours hooked up and which model do you have?

    That's what I've been wondering. :D

I'm glad I got my PS3 back when I did (late Dec.09). This shortage really has gone on for a bit. I figured they'd be readily available again by now.

    Hmphh...

That new 3D one and HDMI, just like my PS3 and Xbox, but when I run movies off them, I only have to be at 30-50 to get decent levels. When I play movies on my Samsung, I have to take it up to 100.

It's the end of the Japanese fiscal year, so the TRUE reason behind the "tight supply" is probably that Sony is holding back production to make sure their inventory of parts and unsold/unshipped product at their factory is at its absolute minimum (gotta make the books look as good as possible for your investors!). I'd expect that they'll start becoming more available again after June 1st.

Every store here has at least two, with Best Buy normally carrying at least ten.
