Has anyone who bought protoform starscream seen any signs of GPS(Gold Plastic Syndrome)?
I still don't know what GPS is >_>
Gold colored plastic has a horrible tendency to get brittle & break VERY easily...
Some say that even if you look at it the wrong way through a sealed bubble, the plastic will break on it's own!
I thought it takes at least a few years for the gold plastic to crumble?
Ah, thanks for the clarification...
That'd explain why so many people are paranoid with opening/handling things such as Black Zarak eh?
That was my understanding as well, that it would be 2 years or so down the line before cases would start popping up.
Starscream has no gold plastic.........................
GPS is normally in figures with plastic made to look like gold, which usually has a lot of metal flake in it to do so. I assumed it was that making older gold plastic figures crumble...
As for modern figures, they take care of that now, figures with gold-colored plastic are usually a few shades off to avoid the problem (Universe Cheetor, Alt Swerve, repaint Vector Prime) and dont contain as much metal flake. Protoform Starscream should be fine.
To my knowledge the most recent figure to have GPS problems was BW Transmetal Megatron, and yes, it took a few years for the problem to manifest (presumably the plastic gets brittle as it chemically 'settles' over time.)
In a switch, on TM Megatron it's the BROWN plastic that went brittle, and not the metallic gold/copper-coloerd plastic.
My BW Neo Randy lost his hand this year. I have a spare MISB one but I guess he'll have to stay in the box
Takes a while for it to happen.
I bought a mint in bubble GI JOE SERPERNTOR figure (I'm a packet opener but couldn't find a loose version) and as soon as I did open it, the thing crumbled. That was after a gap of around 15 years (although it's impossible to say at exactly what point he became brittle!)
Mine got a mysterious stress mark on one of the 'wings' but nothing else...
My BWN Randy lost a hand, too...
The whole toy is gold plastic.
does anyone have pics of this GPS? I am really curious now.
Yeah, G2 Slingshot is Living Dead proof of that. I've gone through 3 of those guys trying to get a complete one.
GPS was one of the main reasons I bought Starscream (the other reason being wanting to support the idea of protoform toys); I wanted to see the effects firsthand (assuming he's susceptible to it). I've noticed bits of dust sometime fall out when I move his joints, but I dont know if thats a sign or not
The grade of plastic they use doesn't do that anymore. >_>
BW Grimlock disagrees.
BW Grimlock was a decade ago
I was selling one on ebay, and it shattered while I was packing it up to ship. Luckily the seller was after the chest, so didn't care. I think I only sold it for like $4 plus shipping.
