No, they're going to be given away to an attendee at the grand prize raffle at the convention.

It may be telling that these are going to be raffle prizes and not available for purchase. IF Hasbro were to raise the issue, Pete could say "these are hand-painted samples I am giving away, not factory-made finished products I am offering for sale."

I'm seriously considering going to this. And it's a 10 hour drive for me.

Seriously, what is with Funpub and Action Masters? They must have made more AM homages than anything else.

I have never thought of it as a fetish, but I love their Action Masters. Got 'em all and would have bought a Botcon 2017 set of more. Oh, well. I'm sure as shit not travelling there for the purpose of hoping to get a mock up. I'd buy it, though . . .

Hey, it's a 27 hour trip flight for me... but I've got family in the area that I need to see anyway... so... maybe.

oh i'm sure the actual toys ARE hand painted customs. the question is were they conceived of under the terms of the license specifically for botcon 2017 or not? in one case, the advertising is accurate but could possibly run afoul of the terms of the license depending on the wording of the contract (or not!), in the other case the advertising is being disingenuous and these are just some customs pete has thrown together with ideas he had but were not pitched or approved for botcon 2017.

either way, it's a space i find interesting to think on, especially when so much of the hobby is at odds with the idea of IP as it relates to not only licensed and unlicensed toys but automobile licenses, etc.

we know hasbro owns, or has access to, the rights of their concepts at minimum since we've now seen a Shattered Glass MP10.

Right, so presumably Pete has checked that out or been granted a release by Hasbro to present their IP.

them giving that release would also surprise me, but it's really the only possibility where this adds up.

Why surprising? Pete was a key employee of a valued licensee for eleven years. Why wouldn't Hasbro let him do this, if only as a courtesy or a thank-you for his years of service?

Right. Who's the say Hasbro doesn't want to take the concepts and release them as the next Chaos on Velocitron set?

On the other hand, I could see this being granted, assuming they don't already have the rights to do so from the FunPub license (and assuming FunPub granted it, which seems like a smaller hurdle than Hasbro).

Well, under the assumption that Hasbro had already vetted these (NOT an assumption I'm making personally), they would therefore be concepts that Hasbro's said "we don't intend to do these."

As has been stated more times over than I can count, "plans can change," but Hasbro's less likely to say "no" to sharing plans they've in essence already said "no" to producing.

And, actually, even if Pete DOES share them, nothing's to stop Hasbro from going ahead and producing them later, if Hasbro so chose.

well since @Petes Robot Convention is on these boards, maybe he could clear up the nature of these then?

are they actual, approved/rejected botcon ideas submitted to hasbro?

hey man. you know how we get hasbro products, then 3p figures and then you get the simplified knockoffs? its a lot like this, we get hasbro cons now and we get the 3p one in tf con and then you got this knock off one going around.

Of course, it's also a possibility that figures that were originally developed for BC17 have already been adopted into retail releases. Like what if when you get to the Con, you see a much better painted Nautica among the prototypes?

We also do not know what Hasbro's plans are for HasbroCon or even SDCC either. It could be possible that Hasbro is letting these figures be revealed at Pete's shindig since it's earlier in the year than Hasbrocon, to garner interest for possible exclusives for HasbroCon.

There's several angles you could look at this as incentive for Hasbro to not protest it.
