Excellent. Even if he's not going to direct, having him directly involved in the production can be nothing but a good thing. I'm interested in the sequel, though...
He's not directing it. He's the executive producer. HUGE difference. Dude, awesome tune, thanks for that.
you know there's only one thing that is more awesome that this. That's if they were to have him make the silmarillion!
I don't know if the Silmarillion would work as a movie. There are about 30 or so different stories in that book, it's a big anthology. Maybe a mini series could do the job.
it could easily be done as more than one movie, just like lord of the rings (which is not really a trilogy, he was forced to break the book up)
Haahaha. Too bloody true! What an awful film! Much as I love him I'm not inspired by some of Jacksons ideas concerning The Hobbit though. It really doesn't merit two films or the 'Rings' style backstory that he has commented on including. The Hobbit was always a fun KIDS story. It would be a shame to see it 'adulted-up' to suit the later trilogy. As for The Silmarillion - not a chance. Aside from it's length, it lacks the character detail of LOTR and is essentially a historical compendium to support it. With apologies to the Tolkien die-hards, it's a very airy-fairy work in comparison to the 'Holy Trilogy' (Ha-ha! Bugger off Star Wars!). Most people have problems getting through it. Although I do really recommend 'Master of Middle-Earth' an ace book about the themes of LOTR. Very good. *Edit* I just read Cakirs post, I'm with him. Can't see the mini-series myself though. Audiences need that connection to the characters, which would leave the screenwriters with a LOT of work. (The book is written as a historical myth told by those who live in Middle-Earth) I've also just read the definition of the two films. Whilst I'm glad that the intention is not to break up The Hobbit, I remain unconvinced by the companion movie. Still, always room for some Tolkien eh? Directors? I dunno. You really need to love the books otherwise there is no point.
I fucking love The Hobbit, read it as a kid and read it again just a few years ago. It would be great to finally get a good movie rendition of it.
As long as he's attached to it, it should turn out great. Now, who should they cast? Ian Holm's a little too old to play Bilbo again. Sir McKellin should definitely return as Gandalf, though.
I disagree. they can make him look plenty young enough again. Its all whether he's up to it I say (which I really hope he is).
Finally! I hope Peter got what he deserves. I cannot wait to see the troll scene, as well as Smaug! The last battle should look pretty epic too. Im not to sure about the second movie though...what story could they use? Maybe something with Tom Bombadil? Probably not.
You do realise that those dancers are in their 60's and 70's by now right? As for the topic, great news. I'd love to find out how much New Line had to give PJ to get him on as an EP tho. I think MGM reminded them that the money they'd make with Jackson was gonna be a whole lot more than paying him what they owed him. That said, even if he doesn't direct, I hope he and Fran get to write the scripts as that was what made the LOTR movies so wonderful to me.
