Peter Cullen Talks About Optimus Prime, Transformers: Movies, Games And Prime

Although he’s not the only actor ever to lend his voice to the leader of the Autobots, Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime.

The 65-year-old Montreal native was a fixture of Saturday morning cartoons like Voltron and DuckTales in the 1980s, but he’s best known for creating the commanding basso tones of Transformers‘ main character, Optimus He returned for Michael Bay’s live-action Transformers flicks and Activision’s new videogame, Transformers: War for Cybertron, released Tuesday.

In an exclusive audio interview, Wired.com talks with Cullen about the origin of Optimus Prime’s voice, how the character became a phenomenon, the experience of acting in a videogame, and other characters he’s done throughout the years.

He will be reprising the role of Optimus Prime again, not only for the upcoming third Michael Bay Transformers movie, but also for the Transformers: Prime animated series, slated to come soon to Hasbro and The Discovery Channel’s new “The Hub” network.

Was it me, or did he talk about a second game? around 14 minutes or so he talks about seeing the guys at activision play the game and he thought they were very good at the game, and then ads "that was the FIRST one. the second one looks amazing, but that was the first one" or something like that (written from memory)
    Did he slip up? :drunk

also, when he rambles at the end he says he want to help make the third movie and the video gameS more successful :D

Another decent thing about Peter Cullen is he appears to be a decent and modest sort of fellow. A welcome departure from some Hollywood types with fat heads.

I love Peter Cullen! He should get some sort of award.. though I'm not sure what. He's truly a cool guy that loves the fans. I'd say he actually has a lot of the real qualities the Optimus Prime has!

Btw, I felt like the interview sounded a bit awkward. Or was that just me? It just doesn't seem like it flowed very well..

Yes! I heard that too! But I'll be surprised if they're already working on a sequel for WFC even when Cullen went in to record. I don't think game studios work on that kind of timeline. Could it be another game altogether?

He could have come in very late in development. They usually have placeholder voices at first. And the guys that started the project with the first game may have started planning the second pretty early in development of the first as well. The writers, concept artists and so on can have been working on a sequel/another game for a while now.
I'm stretching it, but it's possible.
However, considering he was at activision watching them play, maybe it was a TF3 game he saw, by another studio. Or, for all we know, he might have caught a glimpse of a totally different non-TF game :p

It sounded to me like it might have been done over the phone. That may have had something to do with it.

Cullen is always a class act. Fitting that a character like Optimus Prime gets such a nice guy as his voice actor.
