The title more or less says everything, but to clarify: this topic is where you talk about the times that you've looked at the rest of the world and said "What the Hell is wrong with you?" It can be either a piece of work that they hail as the second coming, but you think is two bit trash, or it can be the other way around. To avoid too much controversy, let's try and stick to the entertainment industry. I'll go first. Watchmen. Full stop. Everyone says that this was when the comic superhero finally grew up. I like to think of it as when the comic superhero choked to death on his own vomit after being bitten by a rabid dog named Alan Moore. Or, more appropriately, it was when the comic superhero was brutalized and thrown from a high-rise window. Ever since Watchmen, superheroes have almost ceased to be heroes. People tell me that superheroes since Watchmen have been more human. That's the goddamn problem: they're not supposed to be human! Hence the prefix "SUPER"! They're supposed to be above our petty concerns. They're supposed to be immovable pillars of righteousness, not the chaotic fantasies of a sociopathic thirteen-year-old. Simply put: Good is never old-fashioned, and idealism beats the living Hell out of cynicism any night of the week. That's what superheroes are about. In all fairness, my beef isn't so much with Watchmen as with what Watchmen represents. I still think the story is garbage, but that's forgivable. Not every comic is going to be a masterpiece. What I truly loathe is that the entire fucking industry took this garbage and tried to emulate it. I found myself hoping the movie would fail simply out of spite, and the people I hang out with will tell you I'm not the kind of person who does that. It really just pushed all the wrong buttons with me. Okay, rant over. It felt good to finally get that out of my system after all these years. Oh, and I'll give you one guess as to who my favorite superhero is. It shouldn't be hard.
