When pictures of DOTM Sideswipe first appeared on this site a lot of people complained about paint.

This makes me think, does paint really matter with these toys. should collectors basically just bully this figure because of a plain grey alt mode?

So basically just answer about if you care or don't care about paint

i'm painting mine as we speak.....

it won't be as good as a lot of the ones you see in the radicons forum...but at least its not that dull plastic color.

though, he will be red as well.

In the case of Sideswipe, the paint really does wonders for him. The DOTM Sideswipe mold is arguably the best so far, but many ignore it because of the very drab colors, compared to previous Sideswipes. Just pop over to Radicons to see just how awesome that mold looks when done up all nice and silver.

Paint apps are important, however I don't think of them as the most important aspect. Design, sculpt, durability, price and functionality all take priority for me. These are toys, not collectors items.

Paint or stickers are what help show the characters personalty and what their correct look is. People usually want it to be ones that exactly match the character design. A plain one has just has the shape. But extra paint apps like the red on Sidearm sideswipe will not be liked often by fans. In short, people want the toy to look exactly like a character as much as it can. Not to much or not to little.

The sculpt is, without a doubt, the most important part. Paint you can fix, but a bad mold is just that; a bad mold.

That being said, Hasbro has just gotten absurdly lazy/cheap with paint lately. I've been working on DOTM Deluxe Bumblebee all day, and it's really astounding how much better he looked with even a little paint to break up all the yellow.

Now, once you add drybrushing and detail work, the detail that they added in to the sculpt is amazing.

Personally, I expect the same for DOTM Sideswipe (my project for tomorrow). Great mold, but virtually no paint. Hell honestly, if they had just made him silver, it would have been so much better. And saved me a lot of future work.

I care about paint far more than any gimmicks.

I don't care that much though because I usually touch up some of my TFs anyway

    Even transformation or articulation?

    Because those are gimmicks.

Oh, come on. Don't put words in the guys mouth. We both know what he meant was "unnecessary" gimmicks. As much as Mechtech looks cool, I could have done without it for a properly painted Sideswipe figure.

Make no mistake, DOTM Sideswipe is one of the best molds of the character, just severely lacking in pristine paint that the character and alt mode DESERVE.

DOTM Sideswipe is just awful as it is. I can only legitimize getting one if it was for a custom paint job, which is what I'm going to do with mine. With the pathetic "paint job" that Hasbro did with it, they may as well have sold it in kit form and have you build it yourself.

    I would've LOVED that.

I think the gimmicks in question are gimmicks like head masters, target masters, minicons, the combination gimmick of Energon.... stuff like that.

I don't really consider transformation a gimmick for a Transformer... its just what they do. Articulation.... well I can go 50/50 on it. Articulation came as a result of newer technology.

Quality paint apps and excellent articulation or, as they say, "GTFO".

I love great paint applications. However, I know the struggles Hasbro faces in trying to keep things at a good price for the consumer.
