Whats up with the all boards lately. Everytime I look there is this huge overabundance of new people. What's the attraction, the new movie? Was there a "We pay You $5 for New Membership Day"?

    It's the movie. :)
Lots of TF fans get reminds they're TF fans because of the movie, go searching for stuff and rediscover the wonder of TFs. Worked for me, anyways.

I'm one of the new people... just joined in August. And yeah, I'm pretty new to collecting Transformers (I've collected toys for years, but it was mostly just Lego up till two years ago). 'Course, I'm also a male who was born in '78, so like many from that generation I was definitely an obsessive Transformers fan as a kid.

For me, the adult rediscovery of Transformers was brought on by two things:

    1. The Movie: yeah, thinking about the prospect of the movie kinda got me thinking again about all things Transformery

    2. Alternators and Binaltech: Alternators Grimlock was the first Transformer I bought when I rebooted my collection.... and I was hooked. Then I learned that even nicer metal Binaltech versions existed, and started snapping those up whenever I could afford them. Here was a line of Transformers aimed at adult collectors, and that really sucked me in. Alt/BT's are brilliant because in terms of size and articulation, they are what I imagined the G1 toys to be when I was young... only to realize later that most of them are small and brickish.

But it's true what they say about "gateway drugs." Collecting BT's suddenly got me interested in what ELSE may have happened in the 20 years or so since I owned a Transformer..... and now I also have a healthy smattering of G1 reissues, RID, and AEC figures.

Anyway, I hope you veteran guys aren't too annoyed by the flood of new people. And you guys have a right to be protective of this space.... you were the ones who loved Transformers before they became popular again. The rest of us are kinda Johnny-come-latelies. I try to be respectful of that, and defer to your greater experience and knowledge of the franchise and the fan community.

But after lurking for weeks on several sites (Seibertron, TFW, Tformers, etc.) I decided this one seemed like the most friendly and enjoyable space, and joined. Hope I haven't made a nuisance of myself!

Anyway, to all you veteran guys, thanks for letting the rest of us play in your yard! :)

Here is a related question: How many of the new guys will continue on AFTER the movie and its related hype has come and gone?

*EDIT: This is not meant as a dig at the movie in anyway.*

We all know, even if people leave after the movie is out, they'll come back. They always come back.

I say that the n00bs will only come back if the movie is a success. If it's a huge success then they will stick around for the sequels.
