Yeah what he did may not have been the best idea ever, but why should 10 years of his life be taken away for something like that?

Honestly i think this is racism!

ANOTHER THING.....Why can't we worry about the important issues in this country? BUSH LEAGUE!

I didn't click on the link, but from just the story, I'm not catching "racism" from it. however this topic has come up in a bunch of stories here before, and yes, rediculous laws governing the ages people are allowed to have sex need to be erased fro the books.

Weren't they both minors? Or is the age of consent 16 in Georgia? Either way, its a ridiculous situation. I understand having consent laws in place to protect young people, but its exactly situations like this that are the reason the courts have judges. They are not paid huge salaries to sit around with their heads up their arses

yeah saw that this morning. Similar thing happened to my cousin a couple years ago in Atlanta except he was 16 and the girl was 15. So if not for this case he would have got ten years for a blowjob or 2 and then not able to live with his family because of his younger siblings. It's rediculous

No one forced him to get a bj,he chose that.
It sucks but the laws were made for a reason, though they really do need to be updated.

He probably didn't think it would net him this much trouble.

Over here in the UK if 2 under 16s have sex, then they raped each other according to the law. But considering how many underage pregnancies there are I don't think anyone gives a shit.

Every law is made for a reason. That doesn't mean it's a good reason, and it doesn't mean the law is fair or is a good solution to whatever problem it's supposed to solve. In this case, the issue is that oral sex is legally considered a worse crime than intercourse. That's an archaic sodomy law based entirely on religious views about sex, which should never have been the basis for passing a law in the first place. You really can't expect a seventeen year old to be familiar with archaic and unjust laws that shouldn't even be on the books, let alone enforced.

I'm still failing to see how any of this was racially-motivated. The judge, in his understanding of jurisprudence, handed down a sentence which was appropriate for a law which was violated.

The judge did his job. Whether it was "fair" or "right" or not is completely subjective, and only leads to circular arguments, which wind up getting locked with warnings handed out.

Well what are you gonna do? The people with the power to change this law won't benefit from it and may catch heat from their constituents. Those being effected by the law have no power to change it so what are you gonna do?

Judges are allowed discretion. Just because he violated a law does not mean the judge had to enforce the punishment. This judge apparently felt that it was in the best interests of the community and the people involved to enforce it.

Just like I said, in his understanding of jurisprudence.
