Not sure how I feel about them redoing the ship exterior shots. It all added to the craptastic nature of the OG series. It will look too good. Oh well, if they do at least the originals still exist on other media.

I think they should leave it be. The crappy effects just adds to the camp feel created by the often crappy writing and some characters crappy acting. Now a redone version of the effects in the first few seasons of TNG would be great. Bring them up to standard with the great writign and acting of the series.

Someone tried this years ago, but it never got past a Proof of Concept clip. It looked pretty damn good then, so it should look even better now.

On one hand I like this concept, and on the other I think it needs to be left alone. However the new versions will not be available as far as I am concerned, the Article said they are doing it for HD DVD and as far as I am concerned HD DVD and Blue Ray can kiss my ass.

It's not going to be like StarWars, where the original version is difficult or impossible to get, so I don't see the big deal. I also don't forsee a "Kirk shot first" dilemma.

Yeah its kinda cool to use new effects with it but really, what is point in doing it in the first place? I mean outside of attemtping to cash in more with TOS DVD's, what's the point in redoing all of exterior shots, when everything interior will still looked "dated"? I don't get it.

Cool, this gives Trek Elitist nerds one less reason to bash SW now.

So Lucas created Star Wars and Star Trek? Then who the hell is this Roddenberry character I keep hearing about?

    :rolleyes2

I'm with flamepanther on this, there's really no reason not to. Ironically I almost bought the full set of the original series, but wondered if I would really watch them much. Now I'll hold off until the changes are made.

He was a CGI character created and brought to life by Lucasfilm/ILM 2000 years from now and sent back into time to ensure that Star Trek was created.

So long as fundamental design aesthetics remain unchanged (no CGI bumpy headed Klingons, please), and the original versions are made available on HD as well, I've got no issue with this.

Delarsco - the problem with TNG's first two seasons was the writing, directing, and acting. Fixing the FX won't help.

Translation: Star Trek franchise is not as profitable as it used to be, and this is one of the few ideas they can come up with.

Aaaaaargh!! Leave it alone. I am so sick of things being "updated" or "reimagined". Stop waiting your time makinging old things "better" and focus on making a good movie or TV series and take this series out of the shitter. Ugh.

I don't really care. I've got all the TOS on DVD, and thats fine.

Although, for the new CG they better have those magically appearing/disappearing Warp nacelle ball things. (On the end of the Warp engines, there are sometimes 2 big grey balls... and sometimes not...)

What I find hilarious is some mad Trek fans have come up with some sort of explanation for this. My explanation would be 'archive footage'.

I might dig this for TNG, DS9, Voyager, especially given some of the ship-to-ship battles (imagine the Borg battle in "Best of Both Worlds," or Wolf 359, remastered in CGI and with better effects - that would be AWESOME) etc...but for the original Trek? No, I'm afraid not. I prefer the original old models and the old look; I like that it looks like campy, silly, sci-fi fun. I would be equally against them using CGI to help make the interior sets look more futuristic (ie, keyboards instead of buttons, or nicer looking screens, etcetc).

I'm the same with the original Star Wars trilogy, though...I suppose the "camp" factor adds something special for me.
