When you think about it, Optimus protects the humans and Earth, even at the cost of his planet so through the eyes of a cybertronian he is the traitor while Sentinel is the Martyr/Hero (even though he did plan it with megatron but that was neccesary.

    Interesting perspective.

But I don't think it's quite as black and white as that, even if you were a 'Cybertronian'

As with Earth, I'd imagine there would be lots of divisions over the idea of leaving Cybertron anyway. And if there's at least one robot who thinks like Optimus (er, Optimus), you can bet there's at least a few more who think he did the right thing in protecting earth.

I don't think the writers wanted us to think along those lines of complexity though! ;)

It can be summarized in Optimus' quote: "We can't let the humans pay for our mistakes"

He was right, you know. Its their war, so basically, humans dont have to suffer because of what they did.

So Optimus feels responsibility. Thats why, partly, he protects humans. Its not like he is a traitor to his race.

At no cost to his planet. Cybertron is dead, and he won't trade an innocent race for one that doomed themselves.

Optimus sees things realistically, Sentinel only sees what he wants to. If he wants Cybertron to be able to be rebuilt, he'll believe it. Even if it's nonsense.

No he's not a traitor. He stayed true to the ideals of a Prime. To never claim the Sun of planets that contain life. And that's exactly what he did, protect Earth. Sentinel is the one who betrayed what it means to be a Prime, not Optimus. And Optimus never turned his back on his race, if you paid attention to his ending speeches, he asks all remaining Cybertronians to join him on Earth., their new home.

But at the same time, its kinda pointless discussing this topic as we are putting more thought into the characters than Micheal Bay did.

You could call him a traitor, but then you could also call Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Hancock, etc. Traitors as well, traitors to England, heroes to Americans. Depends on perspective.

I wouldn't consider him a traitor, I just think he was willing to fight for what he believed was right, which he did.

Wouldn't this make Megatron a Martyr for the cause also? even though he played a big role in the war on cybertron , his goal was to restore cybertron.

While were at it even The Fallen could be considered a Martyr!

Of course this is all based on you saying Sentinel is a Martyr!

Exactly. SP was doing exactly what The Fallen was doing... trying to ensure the survival of his own race at the cost of other lifeforms.

This is precisely why Optimus is not a traitor. If you guys have already forgotten the Primes valued life greatly as a rule. Sentinel defied this just as much as The Fallen.

Certainly Megatron view him this way, as Megatron is so committed to saving cubertron and it feels Optimus is too willing to give away the future of his race and his homeworld.

From what I can tell Cybertron was already dead by the time they were on Earth, Megatron and Sentinel just wanted to rebuild and repopulate it. Optimus felt we were more important than a dead planet that would be ruled by a cruel dictator.

That depends largely on the point of view AND of the analysis of the term "traitor".

    For example:

    - Did Optimus betray the Autobot Ideals that the Thirteen Origianl Ones taught the Cybertronians? Not a chance in hell, every action of him could be justificated in the Autobot Code of Morals.

    - Did Optimus betray his country by letting Cybertron blow up? Yeah, sort of.

It all depends whether the rest of the Cybertronian race would give more value those noble ideals or to patriotism.

The funny thing? That's the kind of moral conflict [Ideals VS Patriotism] that differentiates The Autobots and the Decepticons from each other.

Op's no traitor. People talk about Sentinel and Megatron seeing the big picture of restoring Cybertron, but Optimus sees the biggest picture: the wellbeing of all innocents that Sentinel and Megatron's new empire would harm. To him, there is no moral difference between a human and a Transformer; it is their actions and their beliefs that determine whether they are worthy of protection or destruction.
