In the first movie, he is with the rest of the autobots on the way to Mission City and only falls back to fight Bonecrusher. It's a short fight, and as soon as it's over, we see the rest of the Autobots arrive in the city, followed very shortly by Brawlistator. So it only took them as long to get there as it did for Prime to take out Bonecrusher. Yet, it took much longer than that for Prime to finally show up in Mission City. Did he stop for donuts or something? Why was he so far behind the rest of the Autobots?

Then in DotM, he and Sentinel were out in the middle of nowhere having a little Matrix discussion ( Why couldn't they have this talk at the NEST base? ). On the way back, when Sam and crew spot Sentinel, they say Prime is 10 minutes back. Of course, he shows up at the NEST base too late to save Ironhide. Did he stop for donuts again? Why was he so far behind Sentinel?

RotF was the only movie we don't see an example of Prime taking longer to get somewhere than it should, but then again, he was dead for the majority of the movie...

    I'd say...

    - On the Brawl fight [Stealth pun!], he was thrown off the road, in fact, he fell of two consecutive bridges in one scene, so he'll have to return the main road [as a car, since he doesn't want to step on other cars], that would take him some time.

    - On DOTM, He may simply have been caught on traffic :lol

    - I don't think his model of trucks can outrun a Camaro/Ferrari/the singray car Sideswipe is.

    - In a high-speed chase, a truck isn't exactly recommended.

I would drive slow if I had a giant trailer on my back too. Plus, he is probably getting too old for this crap! :lol

He probably bitched because he's just grumpy after the fight with Shockwave, then again when doesn't he look grumpy?

Okay, I think Insane Galvatron may be referring to the fact that the Autobots are suppossed to be able to attain higher than normal speeds in their alt modes.

In the first movie, not only is he a Peterbuilt trying to catch up with highly-motivated sports cars and to then find them in the city, but he also had to do so immediately after fighting not only Bonecrusher but Barricade as well, since Barricade was supposed to disappear after Prime kicked his ass, too...but which got dropped from the movie, probably more for budgetary reasons than actually saving him for anything special later on, apparently. Now he just disappears and is never seen after Prime's tackled off the bridge.

So that accounts for that episode of Prime's "missing time."

And it's worth pointing out here since you asked, that Optimus took Sentinel out to not only have a little upper-management Prime-level pow-wow, but also because it was his first day in town and he wanted to show off their new digs and make Sentinel feel at home. Except Sentinel fakes him out and subtly tries warming Optimus up to his plan to pillage and enslave it by showing him how to justify hard decisions instead.

But anyway, yeah, this was another "missing time" episode caused by "streamlining" the story, lol.

Sentinel wanted some alone time so he could hang out and study humanity (as a firetruck in a playground!), but was actually scheming away all the while. And, yeah, in the novel Optimus was meeting with Obama when Sentinel was attacking NEST HQ.

It's kinda unclear how much of that stuff they included in the final shooting script and what's just Peter David flexing his own imagination in his adaptation of the script, but nonetheless that's about as much as anyone knows about Prime's chronic tardiness, lol.

    :)

Optimus was never really that fast in truck mode anyway. He's usually the last Autobot in line when they're in a hurry.

He's old, man. Don't make fun of the old guy. Sentinel only made it back so fast because he didn't obey traffic laws. That's why he waited until it was dramatic to kill Ironhide, he was busy picking stop signs out of his beard in the mean time.

"They really gotta stop putting these on every corner."
