I keep hearing that Optimus Prime and Soundwave or the most Popular Robots in G1. But which is better and which is second best?

I was actually just thinking of that caption over at the TF wiki:

"I'm that guy everyone remembers. No, not the tape guy, the other guy."

Prime is #1. #2 could be several characters: Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Bumblebee, Grimlock. Personally, I'd say Megatron for #2

Both are highly memorable characters. Optimus Prime, however, will live forever. Look how the first live action movie was perfectly fine without Soundwave. Can you imagine TF1 without Optimus, though? The lack of Prime was the only problem I had with the first IDW comics series, "Infiltration".

Optimus only because nearly every year there was a guy who was "big red and blue truck man with mouth plate" named Optimus. Heck, Primals count too. His homogeneity helped the public conception.

Soundwave is the other one because of how whacked out his concept was. He was practically one of a kind. Sure there were cars and trucks and planes and trains... but a scale object appliance, that (thanks to media fudging) could be in any home? That's what helped Transformers. The "ANYTHING can be one" concept. And even if Soundwave is only remembered as "the tape player with the cool voice", he's left his mark.

Before I watched G1 for myself a few years ago, I had never heard of Soundwave...although I HAD heard of Optimus Prime.

    Optimus is more well known.

I don't think there is another transformer that comes close to the popularity of Optimus Prime.

    Optimus Prime. No question.

That was exactly what I first thought, too :D

I say both are pretty popular characters... Optimus Prime was my #1 fav Autobot and Soundwave was my #1 fav Decepticon from the G1 series.

Optimus Prime. From what I've seen around the fandom over the years, Starscream is probably the #2 most popular from G1. Soundwave is easily in the top 5 though.

In this order IMO is how people remember TFs- Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Starscream, Soundwave, Megatron. Those 5 ARE Transformers.

I think his popularity was stapled by the move. Of course we as fans think differently then the general public.
