If this has been brought up before, I apologize. I noticed a while back that most Autobots' eyes are blue, most Decepticons' eyes are red, but Sentinel Prime's eyes are purple. An intentional foreshadowing of what was to come? I think so...

They weren't really purple just a deeper shade of blue with a slight purple tinge to it something like Sideswipe's but deeper in shade.

If you look closely and compare all the bots and cons optic colours you will see they vary in light/darkness and shade within the relms of blues and reds. Put a few head shorts together and you'll notice the differences.

Was it ever explained why characters like Frenzy had blue eyes, even though they are decepticons? Was it just because it suited the character chromatically, or was Frenzy an Autobot who changed sides, like Jetfire?

Forgive my ignorance, but I haven't supported the Bayverse at all, aside from buying / watching the movies.

Remember when Metroplex had red optics in G1?

Most of the time, it reflects the faction that you belong to, but there are some exceptions. I think Frenzy's design looked better with blue optics.

I think that's what the crew thought as well.

I'd like more yellow optics. You don't see them that often these days. It's interesting when you remember that the toys of both G1 Optimus and Megatron had yellow eyes. Soundwave too actually. And the eye stickers for the six original Seekers were yellow.
Lot of yellow eyes back in the old toy days.

The same motif from G1 was used in the movies, according to Bay.

Decepticons red eyes, and Autobots, blue eyes. Although there were some exceptions in the movies, such as Frenzy, who had blue eyes, and Devastator, who has green eyes. Also, Demolishor, who has super cool yellow eyes.

Jetfire is an Autobot later and his eyes remain red. These exceptions also happened in G1. Some Autobots had other eye colors, same for Decepticons.

Its just to achieve some form of balance in the color palette. The motif is the general rule for both Autobots and Decepticons, but there are some exceptions to avoid monotonicity in both factions. Remember that design-wise, sometimes blue eyes or red eyes may not blend properly with the other colors of the character.

Which results in confusion. It's really hard to explain to my 9-year old nephew why Frenzy is a decepticon, a few minutes after telling him that "the bad guys have red eyes, the good guys have blue".

They should have a Transformer where one eye is blue and the other is red. I've seen people where one eye is brown and the other is blue.

Speaking of optics, what's the deal with some bots/cons having those thin lines running across their sockets?

Yeah, they're used as eyelids sometimes in the movie. You can see them blinking with them.

Those lines are to simulate eyelids.

It's meant to humaniza them and give them expression in the face.

Michael Bay says in the dvd2 of TF1 that it was done that way since theyr are mechanical beings, and so its hard to get some expression or emotion from their faces without adding something extra. So, the "eyelids" give them more expression as most of the emotion and the performance of the cybertronians had to focus mostly in their eyes for expression.
