I find it a bit weird how we have all these different primes and yet only two primals (onyx and optimus), could the rank of primal be used in the future for different characters at all? or maybe figure out how high a rank a primal is?

A "primal" is a made up term to denote beast wars. That being said, with only one canon appearance of the name it is impossible to make a reference to any other ranks. Best guess I would probably equate it to an Animated Prime rank.

If you follow the Japanese version(s) there was still the Council of the Convoys which Munkky, Lio and Big Convoy(s) still answered to.

I honestly always thought the name optimus primal was intended to be a joke by the character and not his name before the crash landing on earth

They did have an "Onyx Primal", as mentioned, and even an "Optimus Minor", so...ehh...

I never take Botcon toys as an example of anything in canon,

Optimus minor was listed as a clone of primal

The opening scenes of the first episode are scripted so that nobody says there name till they have their beast modes

However, I would have to go check if depth charge says primal's name before hes reintroduced

Tell him that Optimus Primal 'meets' Prime on the Ark.

Interesting that the term 'Black Jack' was never incorporated into the TV show at any point in regards to Optimus.

Optimus Primal Black Jack, is how the ultra sized toy was marketed in Europe and Australia. Like it was his callsign as a pilot or something.

Because the show was made based on the American line. I find it far more interesting why he was marketed in those regions as Black Jack. Wouldn't optimus primal have done just fine?

It was hardly based on the 'American' line. If it was, then Primal would have indeed been Optimus Prime and Megatron the G1 Megatron. Read the comic that came with the Bat and Croc versions of Op and Megs.

Thanks goodness for Bob and Larry.

Well I meant the names. The story went in a completely different direction. How it was marketed in Europe has no bearings on how they made the TV show.

It could have. Who knows what Bob and Larry researched in their preperation for the show. They certainly showed themselves to have gone to some great deal of trouble to appease G1 fans.

We're talking in complete hypotheticals of course.

The UK did get one up on the US with their repaints of Claw Jaw and Spittor though in regards to the toys.

Yes but until a later showing on channel 5, we got completely gipped on the TV broadcast. AND the VHS release was missing Optimal optimus too.

Primetime kids viewing here in Australia - 3:30 in the arvo Mon-Thu.

    Ahh, the 90's.

But getting back to the topic of the thread...

Using the information we have, plus a little bit creative license:

We could maybe speculate that Primal, in his younger days, was a pilot in some kind of Maximal Airforce, with the callsign of Black Jack, though his proper name might simply have been 'Primal'.

He worked his way up through the ranks, ultimately to Captain, where he came into command of the Axalon.

Depth Charge would have been briefed of the Axalon and its mission to dump Protoform X, under the command of 'Primal'.

So when Depth Charge later meets Optimal Optimus, and calls him Primal, it all fits.

You've gotta love messing around with the tidbits of facts.

He was marketed with both names on the box, 'Optimus Primal Black Jack'. I don't quite understand if they were trying to imply he had four names or Black Jack was a rank or Optimus Primal was a rank, but Black Jack was never used independently(at least in Aus) however Optimus Primal was printed solely on packaging variants and then became the only name associated with the character with Transmetal and so forth.

Theirs been a few Primal's in the franchise. Optimus Primal, Primal Prime, Onyx Primal and Primal Major. Its just a name, it was used as a suffix to differentiate Beast Wars Optimus with G1 but I'm surprised they didn't do the same with Megatron.
