Anyone have any thoughts about China/Tibet and the Olympic torch protesting taken place in SF?

Has anyone ever protested the running of the torch before??

Best time to protest against China's treatment of Tibet I think; the spotlight is on them this year after all. I never expected the protesting to be heavy in the Paris leg though; I was expecting it to break out in London.

Whatever gets the job done. Just as long as it doesn't get crazy violent and needs police and riot squads to quell it.

Alot of the violence, media law, law, crime, gun, music, copyright, drug, sex discussions enter into some heavy issues, but I guess the admins don't want political threads turning into a hotbed for "YOUR COUNTRY SUCKS?"

but like someone on npr said, protest other things, but the olympics is, for many athletes, the highest competition they can go to. don't do them harm by protesting the games...

Well, protesters are already fucking up. Some guy tried to assault someone leaving some Chinese consulate.

Well they also assaulted and wrote grafitti all over a bus because they thought the torch was inside...it wasn't, just a bunch of turists...the protesters still insisted they "got their point across"...um, sure...if being an asshole was your point...

Carrying the torch is probably a once in a lifetime event and if it was me, and somebody decided that they thought mugging me over it and ruining that moment in my life was the best way to get themselves publicity I'd probably snap and see if I could put the torch to some real old-fasioned style use :)  Having a point is fine, but respect for someone who is not involved in your issue should also be considered.

Like the other day with the banners on the Golden Gate. Thanks to those yahoos we now have security checkpoints on each side of the bridge...thanks for messing up some of our own liberties here guys...not to mention all the people irritated in traffic.

Trying to make your point by pissing people off is the best way to get them to actively oppose your own cause.

Actually the Nazis invented the running of the torch as we see it today.

Anyway, I am all for the protesters here. Although above everything else, China should have never been given the Olympics. This is the proper time to bring light to the actions the Chinese government takes on its own people. I am glad this may open up a further dialog on things such as any grievances against Tibet, the oppression of free speech, political oppression, and anything else you might want to bring up against the government there.

Also, rule #4 is a major problem here. It should be revised imo.
