And in typical Hasbro fashion, the toy is not transformed correctly.

Ah, classic. Hasbro should upload the master copies instead of people getting them off of their random VHS tapes.

And Gnaw probably needed a commercial. I hear they didn't sell too good though they were no Battlechangers, but then again Battlechargers were no Jumpstarters.

Gnaw rocked! Loved that cute, fat menacing little guy. Just a really fun design. :)

-ZacWilliam, also completely and unironically loves the Jumpstarters.

I remember at the time, I thought Gnaw looked pretty dopey, but I ended up with a clearanced one (damaged box, missing his gun I think) anyway. Looking back on him now, he's pretty great (although still kind of dopey). :)

Yeah, amazing that even on their own commercials, they couldn't follow the damn instructions and avoid mistransforming their own products. :lol

I loved how the commercials had some hinting of what was to show on the movie even though at the time I did not know that until after I saw the movie.

Even then they have to blur the actors' faces, so it's a lose-lose either way.

Gotta love these old commercials, I always relate them to the Xmas season where they were broadcasted almost commercial break :)

Why? They would of had clearance/approval with the original ad. This isn't COPS or something where they didn't have the approval of everyone in the ad. It was filmed in a studio with some animation tossed in. Unless old toy commercials had a time limit built into the contract with the footage?

Whenever I see commercials like this, it makes me yearn for a time machine. Things were so much better back then.

That's a great question, I'm not really sure why. Maybe there was a contract to run the ad for a certain time and then pull it, to keep the identities of the kids safe?

Hasbro doesn't have the old commercials in their archive. This is why Shout Factory had to use the youtube clips when they added the commercials as a bonus with the G1 cartoon set.

I even asked about this back at BotCon 2006. I had a VHS cassette full of the commercials and it's since long gone. I wanted to recapture all the the ones lost. It's all good though... I'm finding missed ones and even better copies of some on youtube nowadays.

They would have to negotiate a new contract for royalties with the actors since they would be making a profit on it. It's simpler to just blur out the faces and the actors have no claim for royalties.
