    WHERE ARE THE TOILETS??

I've been watching Sci-Fi as of late various series mainly the Star Trek Series and Babylon 5...sure we see the washroom a sink and the showers....

    BUT NO TOILETS?

Have they finally evolved beyond the need for plumbing?

This is just one of those little things that sorta bugs me from watching all the sci-fi I do...

Anyone else notice this as well?

When do you really see toilets in ANY movie or show that doesn't end up resulting in a poop joke?

Star Trek= you do your business in the replicator so it can be recycled into breakfast.

    BSG = Had toilets

Star Wars = I'm pretty sure they just pissed out the window of the Falcon

Babylon = Space stations have bathrooms(pretty sure they showed them in the shows)

This subject is frequently joked about among Sci-Fi fans.

Heck, it was even lampshaded in Star Trek First Contact:
"Don't you people in the 24th Century ever pee?" - Zefram Cochrane

Maybe in Star Trek, they just beam the waste out of everyone. :p

I wonder if they have Toilets in Macross? Or Gundam?

hmmmmm....you gotta wonder with all these combat sci-fi...if they ever thought about where they're going to be doing their reading of the paper other than the regular chairs and places they go.....

Yes this is a thread about why sci-fi doesn't have toilets......lol

still it is an odd question you gotta wonder about DS9 had a "Waste Reclamation" area so I'm guessing that's attached to the station's systems.....do Cardassians have toilets? Or Klingons? We know Borg Don't....lol

    Ebay:
There was one Stargate Universe episode where a clip from Eli's documentary had them pointing out a room that was the toilet.

Law of conservation of detail: in other words, it isn't relevant to the plot (and God help any writer who makes a toilet the focus of Star Trek episode) and therefore does not need addressing.

Or to put into context of your question, who gives a shit.

Time for my boundless knowledge of Star Trek and Star Wars to count for something.

Not too far off the mark really. It was lamp-shaded in an episode of Enterprise. Where the crew was answering school kids questions about life on a starship in deep space. Naturally an 8 yearold boy asked a question about "where does your poop go?" The answer Trip gave was that the poo and wee is recycled into raw proteins and basic organic components then made (via the protein re-sequencers) back into edible food stuffs. It also confirmed that "waste extraction" is shoveling shit into recyclers. And for the 24th century movies and shows you can replace "protein re-sequencer" with replicator raw mass piles.

For Star Wars, Refresher=shitter. Look up floor plan specs for any Star Wars vessel (and believe me they're out there). You'll find Refresher's in all of them.

Now as for the General question of toilets and Star Trek. I can only think of 3 instances where you see, or get a reference too, toilets. Across the 5 series. 1 I mentioned above. The other is in TNG, the Dr. Moreau episode (I don't know what it's acutally called) you can see a toilet in Troy's bathroom. And the solar sail boat episode of DS9 shows an ancient Bajoran zero-g toilet. Also the technical manuals that they've put out for TOS and TNG show were the general use heads are.

I believe in the star trek:TNG Technical manual it does mention a head in the captains ready room (where the captains log is? ;')) and one for the crew connected to the bridge so they are around - you just don't get to see them.

If it's a sci-fi porno, it's usually the female characters' faces.

Damn, that was just plain wrong, but probably true...

I'm fairly certain it's right next to the replicator behind the fish tank.

Firefly has a scene in an episode specifically so they could say that their ship does have in fact, toilets. No poop jokes, nothing other then he finishes, flips the toilet back into the wall and is washing his hands when the real dialogue/story starts up.

One thing that's pretty funny is that if you look at the old Star Trek: TOS bridge diagram, [IMG]
There's a toilet (TL) right next to the bridge screen! I'm sure things have changed a great deal by that point as a civilization, but that's one weird placement! :lol

Yeah, OK, it's not technically on the bridge, but if you don't pay close attention, it sure seems like there's a toilet right off from the viewscreen.
