So one of my buds at Microsoft has been in NYC the last couple of days for the launch of Windows Vista. Fun tidbits below.

They took up two floors of a convention center. The first floor was pure Vista, while the second was for other Microsoft products and third-party software vendors. Packed, he said, didn't begin to describe it. All Microsoft Certified Professionals (which for this purpose meant MCSA, MCSE, or MCSD) that came received the following:

    - Windows Vista Ultimate
    - Keyboard
    - Mouse
    - "Inside Windows Vista," a technical primer
    - Shirt & cap
    - Other stuff

The first 200 MCPs in the door got all of the above, plus:

    - Chopper ride around Manhattan
    - Three-day stay at the Waldorf-Astoria
    - Few minutes face-to-face with Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer
    - Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
    - SQL Server 2005
    - Exchange Server 2007
    - Visual Studio 2005 + latest beta
    - LifeCam VX-6000
    - $300 credit towards a certification on the next server version of Windows
    - Watch & billfold
    - Other stuff

Had I been there, I would have qualified to get all that. :(  There were Q&A sessions all day. In attendance were all types of users: average consumers, casual techies, developers, high-level administrators. The questions ranged from "How do I change my wallpaper?" to "Explain your rootkit memory page protection and buddy-system memory componentizing." They received numerous compliments as well, and my friend had a guy, some technical type, approach him after a session and say:

"Look, I'll be totally honest with you. I use your product because I have to. I don't really like it, I have reservations about security, but I'll tell you this much: I am floored at the fact that every one of you fuckers that I've talked to today knew every goddamn answer to every question I asked. I'm used to salesmen knowing the price and little else."

Jon Stewart was there, as Bill Gates had invited him. My friend met him and they had a short exchange about Bush that I can't post here.

To be honest, I really don't want Windows Vista. I'm happy with Windows XP.

Not hard, considering these are probably all people who like Windows. A lot.

....Im happy with Xp heard a few bad things from the developer perspective-my teachers and profesors, vista is unproven grounds and while I like unproven untested grounds, I just dont want then on my machine.

the GDU is certainly beutiful but dunno if I even waht to mess up with the Os after the hell I had stabilizing this machine Im usun

Ill eventually have it and have to work on it - posibly on a another of my os boot- currently linux, milenium, and xp, or school...

In the computer industry you get 'certified' in specific software to prove to employers you 'know shit' about a product and are backed by the maker of the product to use it.

If you get certified on a microsoft product you are MCP, certified professional.

I went to the vista roadshow here in washington today.

And Pirating is bad. If you want to be a cheap-skate, be a man and run a real 'free' OS like Linux and deal with the advantages and short-comings of it.

People that drink the Microsoft coolade.

Our local Vista/Office 2007 event is on Thursday. All we get for free is a copy of Office 2007. :(

Most microsoft professionals are certified in whatever the 'industry standards' are. They don't 'love' microsoft any more than they love Cisco or Novell. THey just have to know the products to have a job.

I was a CNA/CNE long Before Microsoft, and Novell began sucking multiple dicks in the industry. There was no way I could continue to carry Novell's water for them just because I was certified, so Had to learn MS.

So saying people who are 'certified' are coolaid drinkers is hardly fair.

I was kidding. Oddly enough, most of the "coolade drinkers" I know aren't certified at all.

I work in higher ed where most of the people in IT are highly educated and know there stuff from the get go. As a result, there really is no demand for anyone to get certified. Maybe this is a good thing as most of the certified people I know are too busy maintaining and/or getting certified in something new to actually put their skills to use.

Cool, sounds like a lot of perks.

You could not pay me money to upgrade to a new OS on launch day though. I will be waiting several months before upgrading just to make sure.

I want Vista badly. But first I need to do some PC upgrades, and especially upgrade to a DX10 card.

My computer needs some RAM and has some hardware issues to be resolved before upgrading. I can wait.

Can't wait till people start calling in to work, wanting us to help them get an internet connection on Vista. Supposedly, its a little different than XP

Nice bonuses. I'll probably end up with Vista when I get a new PC. This one is due for a nice long rest..

Agreed! I'll be sitting around on XP for at least another 6 months I'd say.

It would have been great if Bill and Steve were flying the chopper.

I've been running RC1 for about three months, it's definitely 'pretty' but i'm not so sure about anything else.
