Notice how some characters have become repaint only characters?

Take the G1 Protectobot Hot Spot for example.

His first toy was a completely new mold created to be Hot Spot but since then the character has only been repaints of other characters completely unrelated to him - the Universe 1.0 Micromaster, the Universe 2.0 Legends and soon the 6" Titanium. They haven't given the character a brand new mold since the original.

Many characters seem to be like that these days. And it seems that originally a repaint character, always a repaint character. Some characters have always been repaints of someone else despite having many toys to their name - like Skywarp.

Cybertron Brimstone for one. Or Cybertron Dirtboss. Cybertron Wreckloose. Cybertron Backstop (if you don't count Saidos).

We should be thankful for it. Hasbro are just trying to keep the rights to their names while spending the least money possible to do so. Without it we get stuck with "Autobot Jazz" etc.

In general, I agree with the above "rule", but there have been a few exceptions. Thundercracker had his own original/non-Starscream mold in Cybertron, despite beginning life as a repaint character, and Thundercracker was the original mold in the 6" Titanium line; Starscream/Sunstorm/Skywarp/Thrust were repainted from him. As another example, Thrust had an original mold in Armada. I think it's just that some characters are expected to be repaints, so Hasbro just goes with it to make some more money on the molds. Whenever a new Starscream mold comes out (and Starscream, being the most iconic, is more likely to sell an original mold), people start wondering when it's going to be repainted into Skywarp and Thundercracker, so it makes sense to just keep those characters as repaint-only, since the demand is there.

Skywarp did actually have some unique remolding done on him for his Armada incarnation - really set him apart from Starscream and Thundercracker/Powerlinx Starscream.

As far as your main point goes, I've noticed this with Cliffjumper lately. Originally his own mold with the same transformation as Bumblebee, nowadays Cliffy is always a straight Bumblebee repaint (minus the Animated Activators version, which is a straight repaint with a new head).

Energon Wing Saber, Energon Fatimus Prime and countless others

and look at it this way with Hot Spot he was a Firetruck atleast theyve kept that idea and it wouldnt make much sense to make a new mold firetruck when theres already one on the market (Inferno) and theres the RID Prime Titanium which is a perfect fit for Hto Spot (even though it would be better in the bigger class version)

    Hasbro/Takara - Bringing you repaints since 1984.

I'm not complaining though. If it weren't for repaints, we wouldn't have half the fun trying to get all the seekers.

I don't mind it so much....besides would you rather have a new mold for characters like Soundwave, Starscream and Bumblebee or third tier characters like Hotspot? I am pretty tired of the Cliffjumper= Red Bumblebee and Ultra Magnus= White Optimus though.

definitely agree, the seekers are a given, but cj was not a red bb, and magnus wasn't only a white prime, that was a component, not the figure

I agree there. It's different in Animated, where Bumblebee is of a common body-type. And at least Animated Cliffjumper has his own head sculpt. Here's the problematic repaint of Animated Bumblebee that they oughta halt production and give its own head sculpt, because it's important: Wasp. G1 Ultra Magnus deserves his full body. No ifs ands or buts. The Classics line was supposed to have increased show accuracy - and then they frakked that up with Ultra Magnus.
