but if I were to get a 50" HD plasma screen tv and mount it to the wall, where would my existing center channel go? Mount that on the wall above the TV? Place it on a TV stand or cabinet below the mounted TV? Does it matter for anything other than aesthetics?

Most people put it on a table below the tv. You're gonna want it to be the same level height as your ears while you sit.

For the love of your TV, make sure you're mounting that sucker to the beam...

I consider myself relatively handy around the home...but mounting 100lbs to the specific area where it would go is not something I'm terribly comfortable with. I will pay to have the tv professionally mounted. Also for the wire fishing as it's not my idea of fun.

What he said. As close to listening height as you can get it is the way to go.

And don't forget the lovley bunch of cabled that will come down from your Tv to an other euipment, unless your going to get them put into the wall which will mean the TV will be forever fixed there.
