Okay I'm a tad confused here. I've been seeing a lot of references to names of characters, and many of them have not in front of them. Is there a reason why it's got not in the name?

    Example, not-Devestator. And not-Mirage.

Is it that because it really is, but we can't say it is so we say not instead?

They're referring to toys made by third party companies who can't use the character's actual name so they have less of a chance of getting busted under intellectual property infringement by Hasbro

Third-party figures. They're unofficially created, so they cannot use official names. They have their own names that do not infringe on trademarks, but fans prefer to use "Not-____" instead, filling in the name of the character the figure is meant to represent.

Mostly because the names 3rd party companies give the toys are ridiculous or consist of a lot of random numbers, letters and dashes.

It's really a lot easier to just call them "not-_____."

I prefer to just call them 'the FansProject Insecticons' or 'Mastermind Shockwave', for instance.

I've always assumed the "not-______" trend is just a humorous alternative to that.
