Hello, everyone. I recently was alerted that there was an update for Norton, and I downloaded it. After I downloaded it, though, my computer got extremely slow and sluggish. I think it was using an extreme amount of my resources. Getting up to 500,000 K in the Memory Usage. I couldn't even open or minimize/maximize windows without having to catch up.

Anyways, I had enough and uninstalled it. I can still install it if I want.

Does anyone know what I can do to make it not suck up so much resources?

Don't bother reinstalling it; Norton is a resource hogging POS.

Hehe. I knew that was the first thing someone was going to say: That it's a POS.

What internet security/anti-virus program do you suggest? If I can find something better, I'm all for that.

Norton is a virus. It slows down your computer and causes other programs to quit working properly. Alot of the calls we get at work, the problems are caused by Norton or McAfee. Its usually a firewall or email scanner. I'd go with AVG.

AntivVir is awesome. Free, and it gets the job done. I like the Germans.

Uninstall it, burn everything you own by Symantic and DL and install AVG.

Panda Internet Security is great too. You can (possibly still) get an OEM disc from Newegg for 8 bucks.

I've used it for several years and love it.

Get rid of norton, install AVG, and get a decent router with a firewall. A software firewall installed on the computer you're trying to protect with it is absolutely useless.

I hate when people say "Google". Heaven forbid I ask a question. I thought AVG was short for something, that's why I asked. I didn't know the actual program was called AVG.

what do you guys think of microsoft windows defender?

I used to use that.....but it kinda sucks too...

I run Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer once in while to show me some scratch-the-surface vulnerabily I may have in my system...

I never used a virus program cause it slows my comp down sooo much.

AVG is the third one down - you can also find some other titles mentioned by people so far.

I'm currently running a demo of Kaspersky 7 - I've only read good things about it so far, and I'm pleased by the level of protection it offers (both real time and during scans). It looks like it's one of the more expensive options, though.

Go with AVG like others said. I installed it based on their advice and am 100% satisfied. So far it's trapped all the viruses that came through and I haven't had any problems with my PC because of it.

Yep, use it on both my computers and I love it. Although it startles the shit out of me when it finds malware of viruses...that noise sure does get you attention! :lol

    Highly recommended.

Sorry to hear about your problems.

I've been using Norton for years upon years and it's fantastic. Never had a single issue.

I recently had PCCillin but it slowed down my computer alot. After reading this thread, I finally broke down and got AVG yesterday. Its like I have a brand new computer again! My laptop went through the equivalent of breaking up from an emotionally draining relationship to meeting a new person that makes it feel liberated and good about itself.
