Last night a lightning storm ripped through NH and I was all "haha, im not unplugging my computer this time", figuring my 5 year old expensive belkin surge protector would save it. Because really, i'll left my comp plugged in before and never had a problem. As fate would have it though a bolt hit nearby and everything in the house went out. I noticed there was something funky sounding from my computer so I opened it up and saw that my floppy drive was fried. I think nature just made me drop the floppy permanently.

Lucky you, only the flopy got fried. That's the cheapest component nowadays. I always unplug my comp from the power slot and the 'cable' cable (aah, you know what I mean)
whenever there's a storm or I go to bed.

There's really bad storms going thru my area right now. And here I am at the computer. The storms keep knocking out my internet connection though.

You should stick with a Flash drive, they're faster and less noisy than floppy drives. (just found out that my comp has been making those 'tick' noises and desktop freezing a few weeks ago, so I had it unplugged)

My floppy drive made noises that irritated me. So I uninstalled it through the Control Panel.

That was about a month after I bought it, almost three years ago. I haven't missed it once.

A floppy drive is one of the best things you can have if you're having trouble booting up your computer

I would suggest getting a new one. As was noted afew posts above, they're great if you are having problems with booting.

I have used my floppy once in the last 3 years, that was 2 nights ago trying to fix Big 9's antique server.

The only reason it's still there is I do not have the drive bey covers anymore.

As far as having trouble booting a computer that can be solved with the CD-Rom drive just as easily.

I use lots of floppies, but that's because of my SNES "back up" unit...

    Neither did mine.

Which was fun when I realised I didn't have one when I went to put a report onto disc to hand in.

I have a floppy drive because I needed it for college. Some of the computers didn't have flash drive ports.

    Mine died 18 months ago.

However it's fun watching non computer owning friends/relatives when they call around to use it......

    "Does the floppy drive work??"

"It worked last time i used it to save something."
