After a few months of setback (car work, girlfriend being off work, moving), I can see myself FINALLY getting a PS3 by the end of this month. The only issue, is that I want to get an 80gb system, and they don't seem to exist anymore. Every time I go into a store that sells games, I look, dreaming of the day that I will own one. But alas... it is a sea of 40gb systems. I even saw one store with a 60gb system... but no 80's. Is there a reason why they are out of stock everywhere? Is this because of the changing of the controller? One website said that there is a MGS4 version of the 80gb coming in June, but I have no interest in that game. Is it just me? Maybe it's a Canada thing? Anyone else not seeing these? (Mods... I goofed on the thread title, perhaps we can get it changed to "No PS3 80gb's?!?" My bad)
Honestly, I say get the 60 GB if you can find it. It's the most complete iteration and you can easily swap the hard drive out for a much larger one.
The 80 GB PS3 was discontinued a few months ago, then the 60 GB also went away. Now the 40 GB seems to be the standard model I'm thinking to buy a PS3 soon too (maybe as early as tomorrow) and since the only game I own for the PS2 is FF 12 I should be ok... I hope
get the MGS4 bundle. you can always sell MGS4 if you don't have any interest in it. and hey, dualshock 3 is in the box.
I would say this as well, not to long now, dont bother with the 60GB as it's long gone now and fetching high prices on eBay.
can the 40gb's hard drive be swapped as easily? I'm not planning on getting one just yet - but I would like to at some point this year..if the 40gb's not swappable might up my looking for a 60gb...
Any of the PS3s are made to upgrade the HDD with ease. I have actually been thinking about getting a 250gig SATA HDD for mine for about 140 bucks. If you don't plan on playing any PS2 games then the 40 should be fine.
so other than the hard drive size... any other differences? if not with the cost of HD's I wouldn't worry about getting an 80gb one ... just whack in a 320gb drive
Can anyone confirm the 80gb system being discontinued? (please post a link, I haven't seen this anywhere else) The 60gb I found was only 20 bucks cheaper than the 80 and it's long gone at this point. I want the 80 for it's backwards compatibility as I can sell off my PS2 when I get it. I might have to do the MGS4 bundle... but that would be a big hassle I think. Thanks to whomever fixed the thread title.
The 60gb is the best one made so far, as it's the only one that was fully backwards compatable with PS2 games. 80gb had software emulation for PS2 games, but a lot of PS2 games have issues running on the 80gb apparently. As for the 80gb being discontinued: http://www.ps3vault.com/ps3-80gb-to-be-discontinued-low-sales-cited-2637 http://www.psu.com/Update--GamestopEB-discontinue-80GB-PS3-News--a0002557-p0.php http://loot-ninja.com/2008/01/30/80gb-ps3-discontinued-at-gamestop-and-eb-games/ http://www.pregamelobby.com/forum/ps3-ps2-psone-discussions/10817-80gb-ps3-discontinued.html
dude you shouldve kept up with reading the boards!! This was a few months ago. Your best bet is Ebay or Half.com. Maybe Gamestop
I thought I had!!! I even had a lengthy thread awhile back about my forthcoming purchase and several questions I had regarding it. I don't know how I missed it. I have this weird feeling that I saw one at HMV a few days ago, but I'm wondering if it just a box or if it was the actual system. I think I'm going to go scope around tomorrow and really look and credit card it if I have to until the end of the month. Geez, of all the things to miss.
I got an 80gb PS3 a couple months ago at walmart (in ontario) it came with a coupoun to send out for 5 free Bluerays (which came in the mail a couple weeks ago). It also came with motorstorm the 5 bluerays I got were SWAT, Omen (remake), The Prestige, Full Metal Jacket, & American Psycho (they look awesome).
Well... bad news and good news. HMV had not one, but two boxes for 80GB PS3's. They were both empty and display boxes only, and they had no PS3's nor were they getting any anytime soon. That's the bad news. The good news is that EB games said that the lack of the 80GB were only a stop in production, and not exactly it being discontinued. This has to do with the change in the controllers. They are expecting the MGS4 bundle packs to show up on the launch date of the game (June 12th), at the same prices as before ($499.99), but they weren't taking preorders on them.
