Since I don't frequent this forum, I dunno if this has been posted.

Any way, I have it in good authority that Wal Mart will be doing away with their lay-a-way. I'm not sure if this is a store-by-store thing, regional thing, or an across the board corporate decision.

If you are like me, lay-a-way comes in handy when something like 3 Alternators shows up on shelves and you don't have $60 to blow at the moment. So, for people like me, this sucks. In my area, this is the one thing that made Wally World stand out from Target, TRU, etc.

I think it will be gone by September.

NExt time I'm at WalMart I'll see about asking someone. I never used Layaway, but I probably should start (Alt Meister...)

I can see how that'd definitely blow for a lot of people but it won't affect me, as I never use it. Still, hopefully it won't be totally done away with.

Do you know what the reasoning is? Too many people never getting the items?

From what I understand, Wally World will be making many internal changes.

I guess they are doing away with certain warehouses, so that instead of storing merch. at the werehouse, they will now have some more room there at the store. Probably saving some money on rent.

Another change is that instead of the truck being unloaded box by box, everything will come pre-palletted and pre-sorted by department. That will be good news for some of the folk who will do the unloading, but may be bad for the rest who will no longer be needed (if you catch my hint).

All-in-all, it sounds like cost saving tactics. Be that as it may, when alll is said and done, there will be no differences between Wal Mart and ony other retail. Target is colser to me than Wal Mart any way.

I hope not. More than once Layaway has saved my bacon. When the WM wave of Lengends came out I had to put all of them and and the 2 packs on layaway.

    Same with the occasional TF.

I doubt they'll ditch it store wide, unless the competition did the same. Simple reason being, if you can layaway at Target or somewhere but not there, then you'd layaway at the rest, right?

Apologies if I'm making assumptions, I'm UK based and none of the stores here have things like that. Or TFs for that matter.

I hope this isn't true....It has saved my butt plenty of times in terms of finding and ontaining items. Christmas layaways are huge though....at least around here....I doubt ours will stop. Plus we have the distr. center 30 mins away......

While I can see that this isn't good for people that can't get everything they want at once, at the same time this will be better for more people.

What I mean is, you have some people that come through, snag all of the rare items, and deny other people that have the money the ability to buy it. Then of course there's the scalpers that grab a bunch of good stuff, throw it on lay away, and keep the prices for certain items artificially high (on ebay). I look at this as more people being able to find at least some of the figures that they want, even if they don't get all of the figures that they want at once.

Actually, Wal-mart doesn't have any competitors with layaway. Toys "R" Us did away with it something on the order of a decade ago. I don't remember Target offering it for even longer. K-Mart ditched it too. Wal-Mart has really been the last holdout.

    Credit card > layaway

Hell man, that's what CCs are for, buying shit you can't afford. The very concept of layaway seems like a throwback to when credit actually had to be earned rather than just given away.

My parents always used layaway for Christmas shopping when we were kids. They'd put the stuff on layaway so they wouldn't have to bring it to the house where we'd find it.

    Effective as hell, too.

No kidding. Peoples' credit must be pretty bad if they can't get a credit card. My 16 month old son could probably get one.

I may be setting myself up by saying this... but what the hell...

    With respect to toy collecting:

Isn't layaway kind of like cheating? I mean if you cannot afford it, then why should you be able to put it away for yourself? If I can't afford to buy something... I don't buy it.

Or as said above... that's what CC's are for.

sounds like they're going the way the grocery stores do it.

I heard the way walmart unloads their trucks, and puts stock up, its rediculous and no wonder they hardly get anything restocked

I think the last time I ever used Layaway was at a Hills store to buy a new Nintendo Entertainment system.
