I bet this has something to do with the rumor that Animal Crossing Wii is going to be an MMO game.

That's lame, but Nintendo is a business after all. . .you can't blame them for charging if people will pay.

Well Nintendo WAS going in the right direction with online >_>.

Yeah, but will the casual gamer pay? That seems to be Nintendo's target audience.

I don't think this is anything that Earth-shattering. I think we'll still get things like Mario Kart Wii with free play, but any MMOs that are coming you will have to pay for. Just like how you had to pay to play PSO on the Gamecube.

EDIT: And this really doesn't make Sony all that different. If World of Warcraft PS3 edition was coming, that would not be free to play.

    Because I downright LOATHE them.

I can't stand pay to play systems. One of my biggest problems with MMOs (other than the fact that they just aren't all that good anyways) is the whole pay to play system. I understand they need the money for servers, I know WHY you have to pay. But I just..dislike the fact that I have to continue to pay to play a game I purchased, and if I don't I have a useless disc laying around that I payed 50 some bucks for.

I gotta agree with Twist, compulsory Friend codes were an awful idea to begin with, pay-to-play online and friend codes, hell no. Though at least SSBB doesnt use that.

As much as I would want Animal Crossing Wii, I wouldn't play it as an MMO, I can just imagine how the furries will take to that, especially if you could play as an animal. One trip to Second Life and a brief encounter with a furry was enough to put me off anything MMO with animals involved. Ugh.

Excuse me if I stick with XBL.

but but but... why do you loath them?

and yeah QFT... I don't mind 8 bucks a month for live (rather that then a 60 chunk that I can spend on a game), and of course I dont' mind Sony's free network either. But paying for a service where I have to get Smasher's phone numer (see numeric ID) instead of just clicking on him and adding him as a friend just doesn't do it for me.

I dont see why this is a big deal.

for example any MMORPGs on any system are going to cost money. look at FFXI on the 360. you have to pay a fee completely seperate from live to play that.

and yeah, as it was already said, of WoW was on the PS3, it wouldnt be free. Just like FFXI and Everquest 2 on the PS2 werent free, when every other game was. and NGW, saying Sony is the only one doing things right? this move is EXACTLY what sony is doing. they have a free play system, but some games cost money.

server-intensive stuff requires money. there's still gonna be free online games, but some stuff they will have to charge for.

I refuse to pay for online play, so I guess I won't be using Wi-Fi.

    Gg, Nintendo.

They are just as bad, if not worse than Nintendo was in the early-mid nineties. They are horribly, painfully arrogant. They're hypocrites, liars, etc.

They need to take a fall, be humbled. It did a world of good for Nintendo.

We are lucky they don't have us paying to have the Wii online. It's a service that they are letting us have for free.

I think if they start charging to play certain games online (seems to be MMO's people are talking about mostly), that the target audience will pay for it. Pay for play is not for the casual gamer, because the games they are probably talking about won't be for the casual gamer.

Exactly. While I would've agreed with everyone maybe five years ago about not paying to play, after playing WoW (my first MMO), I understand the reason it costs so much to keep a game like that running. I just hope this means that Nintendo finally drops the friend codes and goes to something a little more substantial.

In that case I need to go and buy a Wii, since Nintendo is the epitome of honesty and sincerity. And that guy Regie, pure, humble, and true with nothing but honest, non-PR messages to his customers. I can't wait to pay 10 dollars for a Genesis game or 10 dollars for a NES "20 years game"(after spending 10 on points for an 8-dollar game), while I'm paying 15 for an Xbox game, and 6 bucks for a PS1 game.

And when I did own a WII, I thoroughly enjoyed paying extra for a web browser that my PS3 came with, and absolutely orgasmed at having to call someone to receive their code to add them as a friend. If this is the kind of services Honest, devine, and pure, Nintendo has to offer, than I will give them half of my paycheck for their online service.
