My boys want it for Christmas. Which one should I get? And what's the difference between DS and DS Light? Any help would be great. I'm a rookie in the video game scene.

The DS Lite is pretty much better than the original in every way (smaller size, better placement of power button, bigger stylus, brighter screen, and better hinge connecting the two screens). If it is a choice between the original and Lite, pick Lite.

Now, if the DSi is in consideration, then it gets a bit tougher. Once again, they improved on the power button, and they now added downloadable content (internet browser, downloadable games, etc.), but you lose the GBA slot. If your boys have GBA games, and no longer have a GBA, then I recommend the Lite. If they do still have a GBA, then I recommend the DSi.

The DS lite is definitely the way to go. It has a backlit screen which is a lot easier on the eyes.

To be honest, I'd be suprised if you could find an original DS anywhere as those have not been available in most stores for years.

There is also the DSi and DSi xl which are the most recent. both of these have cameras built in for added functionality and can read SD cards, but lose the ability to play gameboy advance game cartidges like the DS and DS lite

So it's better to get DSI because you can play gameboy advance games on it? I guess that's what I have to get then, because they have a ton a gameboy advance games.

Actually, what I'm saying is that the Lite might be better than the DSi if you don't have a GBA. The Lite can play GBA games, but the DSi doesn't. I like the DSi more because I still have my GBA, so the DSi's lack of a GBA slot isn't a factor for me.

To be honest, choosing between a Lite and DSi is pretty tough. It's basically a matter of weighing the advantages of the DS Lite (GBA slot) and DSi (downloadable content) and choosing accordingly.

My boys both have a gameboy advance and games. Might be best to get DSi.

DS Lite if they have GBA games. The DSi can not play GBA games.

Since your boys have Gameboy Advances, DSi would be fine. It's got a little camera and microphone built in that my nephew loves to screw around with when he's not playing games.

The 3DS will be released in march, so it might worth waiting 3 months.

Since your boys have a GBA and games there is something else to consider. Do your boys have any of the GBA Pokemon games?

If so they can transfer their old Pokemon from those games to the newer DS games through the GBA slot on the DS Lite although it is a one way transfer. This works with GBA Pokemon games Fire Red, Leaf Green, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald and the DS games Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Heart Gold, and Soul Silver. The Pokemon games Black and White due out early next year for the DS will not use this method.

If they don't then get the DSi. Personally I would wait for the 3DS but it is due out around March or April and will cost between $250 and $300. Since this is for Christmas I know that isn't really an option.

The price in Japan will be about the equivalent of $300 US dollars. It is possible it will be $250 here but the US and European prices and release haven't been confirmed yet.

    For kids? Dsi.

Im assuming they're quiet young and aren't very big gamers wanting one this late in it's life?

If so they'll get a kick out of taking photos and warping them and editing them. They can also record each others voices and mess around with that. That could last them hours and that's just stuff already on it.

I'm not sure if flipnote comes installed but I'm pretty sure it's free on the dsiware store, but that will let them make little animations and things. So plenty to keep them entertained without even buying them a game =]

Other then that I would say wait for the 3ds, as chances are they'll see them an want that in 3-4 months time, but I remember what I was like when I was a kid and if I wanted something for Christmas I damn well wanted it =p
