Well I think we all saw that a new DS incarnation was in the works but it's nice to get some concrete info finally. Plus the fact that it's more then just another incremental upgrade to the existing DS is good news. I wonder how nice "highly detailed graphics" will be on this sucka.

Sounds like they're launching it soon too, as with the original DS it'll be within a year of its E3 debut (DSi XL is even deadER in the water I guess for the west). I'm quite happy they confirm:

"The Nintendo 3DS will succeeded the Nintendo DS series and will have backward compatibility for Nintendo DS and DSi games."

As that's a big sticking point for me (and others I'm sure) as I love my DS Lite and would want that game library to carry over of a while longer (didn't bother with the DSi either, very happy about that now as well). The question is are all new things on it 3D or is it just another option for game designers to use/not use based on what they want to make (I'm hoping for the latter). Then do I get a 3DS or wait six months for the 3DS Lite? :peoples:

At the very least it'll make for a more interesting E3. I didn't jump on the DS for sometime after release so I want to wait and see what this thing actually can pull off before getting hyped up.

(anything to give Nintendo something to talk about this year beyond the Vitality Sensor and Motion + again)

I'll wait and see how this one turns out in practice, but I'm surprised this has been announced in the midst of an advertising push for the DSi XL in the UK & Europe - nice one Nintendo.

Hrm. As long as it does everything the DSi does (sounds like it anyway) and isn't too clunky I don't think it could go wrong.

3D seems to be the future of film making, so the jump in gaming was inevitable, I just didn't expect it to be done in the portable market.

It's got gamecube graphics also! E3 will be intresting this year.

Edit: Found another link talking about it.

GoNintendo - MAJOR NEWS - Nintendo launching 'Nintendo 3DS' in fiscal year ending March 2011, 3D without glasses, DS/DSi backwards compatible, more at E3!

"Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Minami-ward of Kyoto-city, President Satoru Iwata) will launch "Nintendo 3DS"(temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.

"Nintendo 3DS"(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed "Nintendo DS series", whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.

We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S."

I'm in, but the technology for non-glasses TV is already developed, it's just not coming just yet, and it's also expensive.

Count me in on this DS action though.

That's right. It will be awesome for my health.

edit 2: this can only mean sexual things for Zelda, and any new Zelda shouldn't control with the stylus like the previous abominations (because putting your hand over the screen would kill the 3D effect), so this is full of fucking win.

I haven't seen any 3D tech that didn't require glasses that didn't also look like ass.
However that was more than a year ago.
Maybe Nintendo has gotten it figured out.

    Interested -but not excited.

Yeah, it's been equated to the little 3D posters you see in theaters. In other words, no real +Z that we were talking about. But I haven't seen it in action, so I dunno.

It's all fun and games until your arm gets ripped off.

If Sony Updated Eye of Judgement to 3D it could be a little like that... minus the arm thing.

There are actually TV companies already showcasing 3D TV's without the need for glasses. It is likely going to use a 3D Parallax screen. What that means is it will show the polarized image onscreen, with a second polarizing screen on top to decode the image. It's actually quite ingenious and works about as well, if not better than glasses based polarized 3D.

    For 3D tracking, yes.
    For display, though?

If they've worked out the strobing effect that could be the way to go.
The strobing effect was impossible to ignore -again this was over a year ago.

I WAS JUST ABOUT TO POST THAT!

I know that if you understand how the developers do it, it's easy to see the gimmick, but man... it's one hell of a gimmick.

I'm actually quite excited. REALLY REALLY excited.

Now if only Nintendo could STOP with the different Region releases, say eff it all with region locking the downloadable content and release the 3DS in all regions at once, I'd be a VERY HAPPY GAMER.
