I'm a beaner, and uhh, well I don't really care in what language my name is pronounced. Other beaners say my name in spanish, and english-speakers say my name in english. Makes no difference to me.

What he's asking is perfectly reasonable.

I personally don't care if people mess up my last name. However, I prefer to be called by my full first name and not a "nickname." What he about the names was wrong. As far as speaking english around him, I'm OK with that. If you are living in the US. Learn the language. I tell that to my father's side of the family all the time.

Seems like there's more than enough crazy and blame to go around for all sides in this story.

    Agree with Kickback.

If I immigrate to Mexico, If i want to work I need to learn to speak Spanish. If I move to Germany, I need to learn to speak German. So why is it ok when you move to the US is it I have to learn YOUR language? You move to a country where English is the main language, you learn to speak ENGLISH! If you want to speak your native tongue do it at home.

It's not like these people are gonna get rich working at a hotel. Collect your damn unemployment and stfu. Worthless employees are fired all the time for not complying with company rules. He didn't ask them to change their names. Just the pronunciation at the jobsite. My name last name gets messed up every time someone tries to say it. Get over yourselves.

im not saying anyone is wrong or right but if the owner had bothered to do a bit of research on the history and culture of Taos New Mexico he could have avoided this whole mess either by just dealing with the names or steering clear of buying the place altogether, and its not just a matter of recent emigrants there US citizens of Hispanic origin who's family have been us citizens for more than 100 years, to me this isn't so much about racism as it is about one man's intolerance and unwillingness to go with the flow causing him to get caught in a shit-storm of controversy

^Going with the flow sucks sometimes. Most of the times, beneficial things are only accomplished through change. After all, the hotel had been through quite a few owners so it's not like status quo was working for it.

I agree but i feel in this case it could cost the guy his business for not going with the flow as unless he changes he certainly won't be getting recommendations by the locals and the story getting wide notice is sure to scare off customers as well, as many people would rather avoid getting caught in the mess by not staying at his hotel even if they agree with his point of view as to not risk ruining there trip to Taos and if he does fire someone because the refuse to use there name in a more Anglo form (Mark for Marcos for example) he could be opening himself up to a civil rights lawsuit

i see what you did there

i think it's not unreasonable of him to ask them to only speak spanish in his presence. considering they were being hostile and insubordinate, and considering he doesn't speak spanish.

I believe he is in the right. If he is the owner, he can set the rules, and if making them speak English (in an English speaking country) and pronounce their names in the English language (Martin in English is "mart-in" ... not "mar-teen" like in Spanish) ... and that's his God given right as an owner.

That's like the Philly Cheesesteak place ... Pat's or whatever ... didn't he start a huge fuss by stating you have to order in English or you don't order at all?
