10 was really good. Never finished it though. 11 was some MMO or something which I wasn't really interested in playing. Have 12 but haven't even started it.

12 has become one of my favorites. Not my favorite, but one of 3

I stopped 10 after I couldn't stand the voice acting. I hope they hire proper thespians like they did for 12.

So... It looks like it'll play like the older FF games. Or is that just me?

The mainline FF games have all been great IMO- but since they do vary a great deal if you like one you may not be interested in the other. FF12, despite Vaan's best efforts, was actually a much darker and serious and all together more western feeling game then the last single player one (FF10). FF13 looks to be heading more towards the super colorful, more anime style of FF10, which may not be my cup of tea anymore, but the series definitely deserves a try from me, and I know I will probably end up liking it anyways and at least want to play it to know everything I can before playing FFvs13, which looks a lot darker.

So do I, but I did like the one in 12....

But my thoughts on the new battle system is that it looks like the old one, but the animations that occur when you press attack are just more fancy. So instead of the character jumping across the screen and swinging, "attack" now yields a combo of animations which makes the battles a bit more movie-like.

There's probably also a bit of Xenogears/Chrono Cross going on, too, where characters are allowed to perform multiple actions in a single turn.

I only played VII, VIII, and a little of IX and X. I already quit after VIII.

I love 7 & 9, 8 & 10 were ok. The online one, who cares. FF12 was pretty good. The combat was fun, but the story wasn't that interesting really.

Maybe try playing FF12? I thought the story was better then FF7's. Then again I thought FF8 and 10's was also better. I don't think the main line of FF titles have been run into the ground- unlike a lot of long running series, they change it up every title by a lot. You can love 7, but hate 10, or love 9 but hate 12. They change a great deal each title so there really isn't a reason to say FF13 will be worse or better then whichever one you love until you actually play it.

I agree with Liege, I liked 12's story because it took itself a bit more serious, kinda like Tactics, and I love the characters.

Oh and Chrono Cross' fighting system was so much fun.

Actually I agree with the other things Liege said too :)

Back in the day, during college, I had a lot more time for these kind of games. Now, I'm not sure I can get into more than one every 2 years of so.

For instance, Disgaea 3, I have been playing since August. Not continuously mind you, but I managed to finish the game recently. Of course, beating the story mode just allows you to get into the real game, the non-linear, ball breaking, level grinding, tactic breaking, true game.

RPGs, well, the good ones, are so huge now with Blue Ray capacity...it takes an enourmous amount of time to 'complete' any game.
