    Netflix's Plan:
    1. have a low price to out-compete video stores
    2. put all competing video stores out of business (aka Blockbuster)
    3. jack up the price to whatever they want

Netflix has now confirmed the changes via the official Netflix blog. Netflix pricing will be as follows:

    • $7.99 for 1 DVD out at a time
    • $11.99 for 2 DVDs out at a time
    • $7.99 for unlimited streaming (no DVDs or Blu-rays)
    • $15.98 for 1 DVD and unlimited streaming
    BASTARDS!

It's still a great deal (the unlimited streaming feature). I'm waiting for them to make all of their content available for stream, since that's the main reason I subscribed last year.

theres always blockbuster online, shipping is almost as fast, they do games. and with the plan I have its only $20 for 3 out

granted the games are quite a bit behind on release dates (for example it wont be till 09/20/2011 for Red Faction Armageddon to be available by mail) but the movies are always available instantly. only downside is no streaming unless you pay extra for i per movie

I wouldn't necessarily blame Netflix for any price increases. Originally when streaming debuted, Netflix received many favorable licenses from content holders who were skeptical about the service and did not have any performance history to base a pricing structure for licenses.

Now that on-demand streaming to the home has proven to be hugely successful, many of those same content providers are either moving their content to other services (like Hulu+) in order to receive higher compensation or pressuring Netflix to raise the amount paid in return for the streaming licenses. Cheap streaming simply isn't sustainable due to the interests of the content providers while renegotiating their contracts with Netflix.

EDIT: "Netflix's licensing costs are predicted to rise from $180 million in 2010 to $1.98 billion in 2012."

Its a great model to stream, because they save so much money on physical media costs, and are able to compete at a much lower price than traditional video stores. All they need to do is cover their licensing fees and overhead, and the rest is all profit, since it costs them more or less the same whether you watch 1 film or a million a month (aside from variable costs like bandwidth and assuming they have a set budget for licensing per month or average it out over the year).

Well that sucks. I have the one dvd at a time option but may have to change to streaming only as others have said. I love Netflix but damn.

I hope this causes enough of a shitstorm that they would back off, but somehow I doubt it will. Two price increases in one year just isn't acceptable, especially now that there are alternatives. Time to see if those alternatives measure up.

    Waiting to see what happens...

They'd be crazy to not offer SOME kind of discount for the combo option.

I am not happy about it at all. I am just canceling my plan till they go to streaming only. Most of what I want is on both and I am on a bit of a budget so while I am sure its a good deal I just cant pay 16.00 for the two and I can't choose to keep on or the other. Sad fact and all but you got to do what you got to do I guess.
