While doing the research for my "heads" project, I stumbled across the box (card) artwork for G2 Jazz.

At first sight, it looked like it was simply a retouched version of the box art used for G1 Jazz. But when I took a closer look, I noticed that there were some noticeable differences. So either at least certain parts were heavily retouched to a degree where the original versions of these sections of the artwork were completely replaced, or this was redrawn (or traced) from the G1 box artwork.

Can you spot the differences (and no, deco changes also present between the toys don't count)?

Then I had Grimlock... apparently, G2 Grimlock's card artwork was either retouched/recolored from the G1 toy's boxart, or it was redrawn/traced to a degree where it was dead on identical to the original aside from the color differences also present between the toys.

But then Cyclone X reminded me of the unused artwork for a G2 Grimlock repaint that popped up on eBay a few months ago... and there I had my redrawn/traced artwork for Grimlock.

Have a look at the three versions for yourself:

Wonder what surprising revelations my future researches for the other G2 repaints of G1 toys. One thing I can already say for sure: G1 Bumblebee and Hubcap have 100% original artwork with completely different poses from the G1 toys' card artwork. :)

    On Jazz:

    Missile is different
    Launcher has differences
Hand Holding the gun is different
Barrel of the gun is different
Part that the head is resting on is slightly different
There are a few differences in details where the left arm (Jazz's left) meets the body.
His "goatee" seems to taper out more on the G2 version.

That's all I can spot at the moment.

    Jazz's both hands are different.

They are certainly was redrawn (or traced), because boxart was actually hand-painted on papers before Dreamwave and that whole bunch of fan-artists became pros.

The G2 Jazz lacks quite a bit of detail present on the G1 Jazz as if they were perhaps trying to dumb down the overall look of the character(less realistic and more toylike).

The grill in his chest has been changed along with the vents next to the grill. Also, the detail in his neck have been removed. I'd say that the G2 art was redone in order to "Jazz" up the pic for the new look of the line. (sorry for the bad but intended pun)

*puts on monocle and puffs pipe*

the jazz one certainly looks redrawn based on the hands alone.

Grimlock's interesting. That third one has his hips totally redone so they look a little narrower, also I think the right arm is completely redone (arm is at a different angle, look at the swords), and his head seems to be looking a slightly different direction.
On his back the perspective of his dino head rim seems to be a little off as well. Same as Jazz, I feel as though I'm looking at him from a higher angle.

The main difference though seems to be the lack of shading detail. The G2 ones seem more streamlined and less "shiny" than the originals.
