Perhaps the designers overlooked something in the prototype and when it was fixed we ended up with.. erm.... that Megs i suppose.

That Wheeljack looks more like the real car. That sucks we didn't get that one.

Nice job once again, Nevermore! Your resourcefulness continues to impress. :D

That early Megatron design is really interesting. Too bad the final product wasn't more like that or a hybrid of the two.

So...does anyone have a link to the early Prime design? I'm curious.

Ahhh, this is much MUCH better than the trigger-wang figure. Still bought him though.

the images have appeared on here before, im sure of it. loads of people mentioned the fact the trigger folded up into the chest.
yes its better than the released version but i have never liked the gun 'bots.
i never really got the idea either. yes its good if you have someone to shoot the gun but its kinda silly if your on your own, just have to lie there and look threatening.

That Wheeljack is a good change, yeah. Looks like they mostly had an extra telescoping section on the legs?

It's all a matter of concept versus practicality/features/new ideas/budget/reality en route to the final product. The situation never changes apparently, as evidenced by:

    Binaltech/Alternators concept drawings
Mp-3 Starscream Concept drawings, and first prototype.
Vast stretches of the Beast Machines toyline.

I saw that a long time ago. Always thought it was cool. The Wheeljack I had not seen though. Looks at "what might have been" are really good, such as these and the original GodBomber protos. Really cool stuff to see.

That Megs is WAY better than what was released. They dropped the ball on that one.

I wonder if some of the changes from concept to final (in Megatron) were to accomodate the pellet-shooting gimmick. Some of the mechanical elements of that look like they might be harder to implement in the concept art design. (of course they gutted the firing mechanism for the Hasbro version anyway)

well, the piece in front of the trigger guard that originally would've folded up onto the chest was clearly nothing more than a way to cut costs, as that eliminated a joint, which eliminated a tiny fraction of metal. a darned shame as that one change made a huge asthetic difference.

Woulda been nice if we had got that design instead. Oh well. As far as I'm concerned, they're more than making up for it with Classic Megs and his robot mode.

Eh, I remember looking at that prototype Megs back in the 80s a lot with my best friend and wondering how it was meant to be (you can actually see him in the art on the back of Optimus Prime's box, below and to the right of Starscream).
